    Women’s club soccer remains undefeated
■ ‘Solid’ Oregon women’s
soccer team dominates its
competition and looks
for more such success
By Jesse Thomas
For the Emerald
With an undefeated record and
nine new members, the women’s
club soccer team is sitting pretty.
Sunday, the women ended in a 0-0
tie with Lane Community College.
“We played really well,’’ said Bar
bie Bowling, coach and senior for
ward. “We were the better team.”
The team (8-2-0 overall) com
petes both indoors and outdoors
due to weather changes. With just a
few games remaining for fall, long
term goals are to stay fit in the win
ter and play hard in the spring
while awaiting playoffs.
“We hope to play our best and be
come a better team together by play
ing off of each other,” Bowling said.
Crew teams disappointed
For the first time, the Oregon club
crew teams competed in the treacher
ous 7K race this last weekend at the
Portland Loop Regatta of Champions.
On the Willamette, the men raced
in the lightweight four and the
openweight eight classes and the
women had two teams competing
in the openweight four. The men’s

lightweight came in fifth out of six
teams, and the men’s openweight
placed seventh out of eight. In the
women’s race the “A” boat finished
second and the “B” boat ended up
seventh out of eight teams.
“It wasn’t a matter of fitness but a
matter of technique for us,” senior
rower Kurt McCulloch said. “This
was a serious disappointment.”
The ultimate experience
Ranked eighth in the nation last
year, the Oregon men’s club ulti
mate frisbee team has high expecta
tions to attend nationals this year.
The two Oregon teams competed
in a 12-team tournament last week,
with one team going to the quarterfi
nals and the other making it to the
finals. The fall is actually something
of a preseason for the team because
the real goal is to win the Northwest
Regionals in May and move on to
the national tournament.
“This is a very encouraging sea
son with all the veterans returning,”
captain Josh Greenough said. “I
think we will do better this year
than last year.”

the Ducks played tough against Ari
zona State before beating Arizona 2-0
on the same weekend.
Then, Oregon faced top-ranked
UCLA and Southern California and
never fully recovered from the drub
bing it received at the hands of those
two teams. The Ducks were scored on
11 times that weekend and didn’t
win a game for the rest of the season.
Steffen remains optimistic about
the team’s chances for next season.
“The fact that they’ve been
through this and lasted through this
is very encouraging,” Steffen said.
Also encouraging for Steffen is
next year’s roster. The Ducks will
take a hit in the midfield, losing
Allyssa White, Melissa Parker and
T.J. Johnson to graduation. But the
team will return all of its forwards
and defenders, as well as the top
two goalies, for the 2001 season. Not
to mention that the returning mid
fielders — Chalise Baysa, Annie
Murphy and Dara Wone — will be
able to more than fill the holes left
behind by the seniors.
While hesitant to use the word
“rebuild” to describe the 2000 sea
son, Steffen is still encouraged
about his returning lineup.
Steffen’s personal most valuable
player for this season was a no-brainer.
“You have to point to Chalise
[Baysa],” Steffen said. “She gets the
attention from other teams, as well
as handling a lot of the play because
of her position.”
Baysa was the team’s leading
goal-scorer this season, and sur
passed Erin Anderson as the Ducks’
all-time leading scorer midway
through the 2000 campaign.
Baysa and the rest of the Oregon
team will try to navigate the tough
Pac-10 road again next season—but
in 2001 they will be older, wiser and
more battle-tested than this season.
