freshmen in her group. Borman,
who was not in a FIG when she
was a freshman, is a member of the
Honors College, another learning
community the University offers.
The FIG program began at the
University in 1982. It was the first
program of its type in the nation.
“The University of Oregon FIG
program has been modeled after by
approximately 25-30 different uni
versities across the nation,” FIG di
rector Dr. Jack Bennett said’
“I was always interested in mak
ing the University smaller for stu
dents,” Bennett said, explaining
what compelled him to start the
FIG program 18 years ago.
Back in 1982, the program was a
simple academic advising initia
tive intended to make it easier for
students to complete courses that
satisfy their general education re
quirements. Today, there is a sepa
rate FIG for nearly any academic
interest, covering almost every de
partment and major at the Univer
sity. There are currently 47 differ
ent FIGs for freshmen to choose
from.
This year approximately one
third of all entering freshmen are
involved in a FIG. With other
learning communities such as
Pathways and the Honors College,
the percentage of freshmen in
volved in learning communities is
much higher overall. The popular
ity of FIGs was heightened by last
year’s new stage in the FIG pro
gram.
“Students in residential FIGs
live in the same housing complex.
This allows students to be in the
same vicinity as one another,”
Bennett said. “However, they are
not in the same hall. This allows
them to be available for each other
but not too close.”
Residential FIGs were designed
to help make the FIG experience
an even greater opportunity to
make lasting bonds.
There are four residential FIGs at
the University this year, which fo
cus on education, international
studies, business and understand
ing images.
