    Beavers, Dawgs fight for seconds
■ Washington will have its hands full on Saturday when it faces
run-happy Oregon State in Seattle
By Scott Pesznecker
Oregon Daily Emerald
The Northwest’s king of the hill
was decided Saturday to the
screaming pleasure of more than
46,000 fans at Autzen Stadium.
'"his weekend in Seattle, the race
is on for first runner-up.
The No. 23 Oregon State Beavers,
making their first appearance in the
Associated Press poll since 1968,
face No. 15 Washington on the road
this weekend in what could be a
Beaver upset or a Husky blowout.
Oregon State stunned the Pacific
10 Conference Saturday by beating
USC, 31-21, in Corvallis. Sixth
ranked Washington lost for the first
time this season in the Ducks’ pond.
“They’re a dominant team and
one of the better teams in our con
ference and one of the better teams
in the country,” Oregon State head
coach Dennis Erickson said. “Win
ning on the road is hard for every
body. It would be a great step for this
program to go into Seattle and have
the opportunity to beat them.”
Beating the Huskies would be a
monumental feat, but the Beavers
could do just that. Washington’s de
fense had a hard time containing
Oregon tailback Maurice Morris,
who rushed 152 yards on 31 carries.
Oregon State tailback Ken Simon
ton racked up 234 yards against the
Trojans last Saturday.
“It's also a tall order for our defense
in that Ken Simonton is right now
probably the best running back in the
conference,” Washington head coach
Rick Neuheisel said. “There are cer
tainly a lot of good ones out there, but
right now all his numbers would lead
you to believe that there is not a better
one around.”
“This game is important because
it's Washington and it's on the road
and it's in the league,” Erickson said.
“We just had a big win; that, to me, is
what it's all about.”

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 6). You're in
love — or soon will be! You're lucky, too, so
what will you make happen? Relax in the warm
glow this October. Open your heart but keep
your pocketbook closed in November. Sudden
ly you understand in February. Follow an old
foreigner's advice to gain abundance in June.
Your Mom probably knows best in July, and
your conscience is your guide in September.
To get the advantage, check the day's rating: 10

ARIES (March 21-April 19) — Today is a 5
— Instead of taking the lead, follow. Let your
friends and a partner or mate leach you some
thing. Ask questions but don't offer much of an
opinion, yet. Give yourself time to understand
what they're talking about.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — Today is a 7
— Choose your words carefully, and you might
profit. Something needs to be said, but some
thing else shouldn't be mentioned. You might
get good at walking that fine line, with a little
practice. And. now is as good a time as any.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21) — Today is an 8

on supplies. If you need to visit somebody, do
that now, too. You may not have time later.
Something unexpected could interfere.
CANCER (June 22-July 22) — Today is a 7

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) — Today is a 6 —
You're a leader, not a follower, most of the time.
