Perhaps the most encouraging
thing about Cartoon Network is that
its success hasn’t prompted the wag
ons-in-a-circle thinking that often
plagues network television (which,
aside from The Simpsons, has largely
failed to capitalize on the whimsical
possibilities of animation). “[Networks]
feel they have to broadcast to the most
average audience. We’re narrow
casting,” says VP of original anima
tion Linda Simensky, who notes that
college students in particular respond
positively to the niche, the piquant,
and the refreshingly bizarre. “I know
that if Cartoon Network had existed
when I was in school, I would have
