there. So we need to make sure that
students coming into [the Universi
ty] have the best possible education.
There will be a rise in tuition next
year, but we have had a tuition
freeze for the last 5 years. So not this
year, but next year, there will be an
inflationary tuition raise. In the last
five years, tuition hasn’t gone up at
all, so it’s just going to be bumped up
for inflation. But we’ll keep an eye
on that.
We know that if the Republicans
take power, we’re going to be bat
tling to keep our student fees, which
we thought We won with South
worth. Last year, with Southworth,
which was a Supreme Court case
where they challenged student fees
all the way up to the Supreme Court,
we won 9-0 ... which would make
you think that the fight’s over, right?
But the Republicans have it in their
platform that they’re going to look at
student fees. It’s basically looking at
if student fees can fund political or
ganizations, such as say, OSPIRG, or
the College Democrats, College Re
publicans, or if students get to
choose where their student fees go,
if that’s legal. We think it is, and
we’re going to fight for it.

Q: What relationship do you ex
pect to have with the administra
tion?
A: We get along great at this point.
We need their help, and thev need
our help for voter registration. We
have some issues on the ballot next
year that I can’t talk about openly be
cause of my position, that could
drastically affect higher education,
not only students, but administra
tion. We need to have a united front
for ballot measures that could dras
tically affect higher education.
I hope I ve established a good re
lationship with the administration,
and I hope to keep it that way. But
I’ve kind of shown in my past that
I’m not afraid of standing up to any
body, and saying what I feel. I’m also
not out to piss people off, or to make
people angry or to set up an adver
sarial relationship.
Q: What does the future hold for
your office and the Worker Rights
Consortium?
A: The ASUO will fight for the
WRC. The reasoning behind that is
because last year’s students voted for
it, and by a 75 percent majority they
passed the WRC. So as far as this ad
ministration is concerned, we’re in
support of the consortium, and we’ll
do all things in our power to do
what was deemed a good thing by
an overwhelming majority.
Our executive will fight to edu
cate the campus on the decision that
was made last year. Maybe we can
go back and explain how it hap
pened, and people will see that we
signed on to the best monitoring or
ganization that was available, and
we'll talk about corporatization is
sues, you know, what happens
when corporations have too-high an
influence on the University.

Sidewalk Etiquette

Riding a bicycle to and from the
University campus is a great way to
travel. We encourage its use, but we
all need to keep in mind the equip
ment, rules, and regulations to
make bicycle riding fun and safe.
Equipment
Make sure the bicycle you are operating is in good
working order and adjusted properly.
6k Make sure the bicycle you are riding is
equipped with brakes adequate to skid on
clean dry pavement.
6k Starting one-half hour after sun
set a headlight must be visible
500 feet ahead and a red reflec
tor visible 600 feet to the rear.
Those who fail to display the
light and reflector are subject to citation and
fine.
6k Protect your life, wear a helmet.
Bicycle Licensing
All faculty, staff and students who operate, store or
park bicycles on the University of Oregon campus
must register their bicycles with the University of
Oregon Office of Public Safety.
Unregistered bicycles are subject to
citation and fine.
Bicycle Parkin?
Bicycles shall be parked, stored
or left outdoors on the University
campus only in areas specifically
designated by the presence of bike
racks or other devices for the parking of bicycles.
However, bicycles may be stored, parked or left in
any area or room which has been assigned to the
registered bicycle owner, e.g., office, residence
hall, or student family living quarters.
Bicycles may be cited and fined or impounded if:
6k Trees, handrails, hallways, parking meters or
signs are used as a bike rack.
6k Parked or stored in such a way that a safety
hazard is created.
<56 Bicycle is blocking a walkway.

In addition to the state laws and
city ordinances governing the
operation of motorized and non
motorized vehicles, the University of Oregon has
its own set of rules and regulations that must be fol
lowed for your safety and the safety of others.
Bicycles involved in a collision are required to ren
der aid as appropriate, call the UO Office of Public
Safety, and remain at the scene until released by
an bfficer.
Those who fail to observe the following rules are
subject to citation and fine.
<56 Bicycle riders must proceed cautiously at all
times, and are not to exceed the posted
speed of 15
miles per
hour.
<56 Walk your
bicycle on
sidewalks.
<56 Riding a bicy
cle on sidewalks, walkways and landscape is
prohibited, except on designated bike paths.
<56 Bicycle riders must yield right of way to
pedestrians and disabled persons at all
times.
<56 Bicycle riders shall use the designated bike
lane when classes are in session.
Roller Skates and Skateboards
Skating across the University campus
can be a fun and easy way to get from
class to class. Remember, you share
the campus with many others. Roller
skate or skateboard cautiously. Here
are a few facts to keep in mind as you
skate across campus.

following can be cited.
66 A helmet and pads are
suggested for safety, but not
required.
66 Use of roller skates or
skateboards within University
buildings is prohibited.
66 Acrobatics or other stunts are prohibited.
66 UserS of roller skates and skateboards must
yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.
66 All skaters and skateboard users must obey
all campus stop, yield, and dismount signs.
66 Skateboarding or rollerblading is prohibited
on sidewalks.

Any University public safety officer or other person specifically author
ized by the Director of Public Safety may impound any parked, stored
or abandoned bicycle causing a safety hazard or cite any bicycle rider
who violates University bicycle rules.
University public safety officers or other personnel authorized to
remove and impound bicycles shall not be liable to the owner of the
securing device.
