Bookreading shares tale of Sioux journey Author James Welch reads from his new novel “The Heart song of Charging Elk” on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Room 175 William Knight Law Center. The Universi ty Bookstore sponsors the event, which includes a book-signing. As a young boy, Charging Elk witnessed his people’s massacre of Custer’s Seventh Cavalry at the Little Big Horn, followed by years of futile fighting and wandering until the Sioux were finally lured to the Pine Ridge reservation. Attracted by the promise of freedom from captivity, Charging Elk joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show and traveled to France. Sickened and injured in a fall during a performance, Charg ing Elk awakens in a hospital to find himself abandoned and alone in an alien culture. This is Welch’s fifth novel, in cluding “Fools Crow,” which won the Los Angeles Times Book and the Pacific Northwest Book sellers Awards. From staff reports Strickland continued from page 3 Mersereau said. In an effort to meet Strickland’s proposed goals the law school is participating in several innova tive projects. For instance, last spring the 21st Century Law School Task Force broke new ground on cam pus when “20 forum focus groups met with lawyers and judges currently practicing law and asked what our students will need in the courtroom and when meeting with clients, and what was most helpful from their law school experience,” Strickland said. And, Strickland was one of dozens of legal educators to at tend the first International Con ference on Legal Education in Florence, Italy last spring, which aimed to “look at the question of global aspects of law and legal ed ucation and what we can learn from other countries experiences and needs in international envi ronmental law.” Additionally, the University is involved in a current movement in the legal world towards Appro priate Dispute Resolution, which focuses on helping individuals resolve conflicts without going to the courtroom. Strickland’s most considerable struggle and achievement at the University co-exist in one en deavor. “The biggest battle was building and paying for the new law school and the task of moving a law school from literally one end of campus to another,” Strickland said. “That has been both the great and glorious battle of the time.” New summer menu in our new atmosphere!
