going on right now, but it also has
a cool retro feel,” said Deborah
Greer, the second-year theater
arts doctoral degree student who
is directing the performance.
The actors aren’t just good,
they’re magnetic. They are so
skilled at drawing in the audi
ence, be it children or adults,
with personal interaction and a
minimum of simple props. Those
performance tools add the perfect
touch to the jaunty musical rou
tines.
“They have been amazing.
They’re truly the definition of a
theater company,” Greer said,
complementing the cast, which
also put on “My Emperor’s New
Clothes” earlier this summer.
“Every .person who worked on
this is so dedicated and that's the
only way we could pull this off.”
The singing, when concentrat
ing on more than just the catchy
words and choreographed
moves, was also very good. Not
an easy feat when singing and
dancing song after song — rang
ing from “Grease”-style to barber
shop — with no break. And all
loud enough to be heard by a
lawn full of children and parents
in an outdoor theater.
Actor Jon Sharpy said that the
amount of singing in this per
formance increased compared to
that of “Emperor.”
“This works really well with
the people we have,” he said.
“We’re all musical people and it's
just fun.”
Mad Duckling’s musical direc
tor, Curtis Williams, professional
ly mixed and recorded a one
man band soundtrack, comprised
of saxophone, drums, keyboard
and other instruments^to back
up the show.
The most amazing quality of
the performance was the time
lessness of the production.
Adults sat just as open-mouthed
and attentive as their children,
total attention consumed, clap
ping at the conclusion of each act
with a child-like joy that only re
visiting good memories can bring
about.
“The wonderful part of this
production is that it appeals to so
many ages,” Greer said. “ It’s not
only fun for all ages, but highly
educational, too.”

“What I call traditional music
of Madagascar, that I play today,
is what we played 500 years ago.
But it has evolved across the cen
turies we are passing through
and that is very important for
people to know. It’s not re-dug
from centuries ago. It’s not that.
It’s a living tradition.”
Tarika’s current tour has taken
them from Los Angeles, to Berke
ley, to Santa Cruz, to Victoria,
Canada, to Eugene and then to
Seattle. After Seattle’s perform
ance the band will return to
Madagascar.
On the home front, Prince is in
the process of putting the finish
ing touches on a solo CD tenta
tively titled, “Ocean Bells,”
which is expected to be released
in mid-September.
Prince, who has accompanied
Mapfumo on three tours to date,
blends Zimbabwean influences
with Hawaiian slack-key tech
niques, creating a distinct and
melodic cultural blend.
Prince, who attended a per
formance of Hawaiian legend
Ray Kane’s at Good Times ap
proximately five years ago and
then opened for Hapa at the
WOW Hall about that same time,
said these two influences
“opened my eyes.”
Prince describes slack-key,
which is the traditional guitar
style of Hawaii, as “rhythmic
and melodic at the same time
with a timeless quality.”
“It is possible to be creative
within that style and create your
own style. I try to do that with
harmonies. It creates a rhythmic
framework. It ties in with the Zim
babwe music, which is extremely
rhythmic, too,” Prince said.
“There is a connection there.”
