‘Scary Movie’ goofs genre
■ It won’t send you crying to
mommy, but it’s good for a
few hearty chortles
By Jack Clifford
Oregon Daily Emerald
“Scary Movie” is dumb, it’s
sometimes offensive, it makes fun
of seemingly defenseless people
and it continues _
left out in the scatter-shot ap
proach.
Some scenes definitely stand
out. One is when a character talk
ing to the screen during a showing
of “Shakespeare in Love” gets
stabbed by other movie patrons.
Of course, while I watched “Scary
Movie” the other night, people
yelled at the screen throughout.
There it’s accept
tne recent Holly
wood trend of
playing up the
scatological hu
mor.
The flick is
also a laugh riot.
A satirical
spoof on teen
slasher movies is
just what the
summer cinema
season should be
offering and it’s
no surprise that
“Scary Movie”
was at the top of
the box office list
after its Friday
opening.

Ooh, how very scary.
I able, but there
was a certain
sense of satisfac
tion to watch
someone get an
over-the-top
punishment for
the same behav
ior in “Scary
1 Movie.”
Another scene
that is right on
the money is
when four char
acters — includ
ing the
“Scream’’-in
spired serial
s murderer —
make fun of the
“Wassnn?” mm
brothers — director Keenen Ivory,
and script writers Shawn and Mar
lon — have teamed up in this rol
licking romp through die inanity of
the more dramatic teen slasher
movies. Of course, movies such as
“Scream” and “I Know What You
Did Last Summer” are parodied re
lentlessly with the Wayans1 style.
But the Wayans take their shots
at more “artistic” type horror
films, i.-e., “The Sixth Sense” and
“The Blair Witch Project” with
equal glee and rarely do they miss
their target. Not many puns are
mercial for Budweiser.
Of course, drug and sex refer
ences abound throughout“Scary
Movie,” but again, the scenes are
probably nothing more shocking
than someone might see on “Sat
urday Night Live.”
So, is all of it funny? No. Some
of the attempts at humor are just
gross or even border-line racist
and sexist. But, whatever. Watch
ing summer movies such as
“Scary Movie” is the time to turn
off the politically-correct radar
and just sit back and relax.
Other movie spoofs
“Airplane” (1980)—Classic la m
poon of disaster flicks is stupid but
funny and launched a bevy of
wanna-be spoofs. Clever, fast
paced, and very funny parody
mangles every Hollywood cliche
within reach.
“ Don’t Be a Menace to South Cen
tral While Drinking Your Juice in
the Hood” (1995) — Parody of
“life in the hood” movies pokes
fun at the attitudes and characters
that are quickly becoming cliches
in the genre. As the title implies,
almost every major black film in
recent memory is given the
Wayans’ drive-by treatment, with a
majority of the plot lifted from
“Boyz N the Hood.”
“High Anxiety” (1977) — Director
Mel Brooks tries hard to please in
this low-brow parody of Hitchcock
films employing dozens of refer
ences to films such as “Psycho, ”
“The Birds” and “Vertigo.”
“Mars Attacks” (1996) — Inten
tionally tacky, this huge scale epic
spoof of monster, sci-fi and disas
ter flicks from director Tim Burton
finds moronic President Dale,
played by Jack Nicholson, his frigid
wife (Glenn Close) and a cast of
thousands battling the green
skinned invaders.
'“This is Spinal Tap” (1984) —Pseu- -
do-rockumentary about heavy
metal band Spinal Tap, profiling
their career from “England’s loud
est band” to an entry in the
“where are they now?” file. Hilari
ous satire.
