Advice
Ask
Harlan
Dear Harlan,
I’m a 17-year-old high school
junior getting through the last
weeks of school before summer
vacation. My problem has to do
with a girl. I’ve had a crush on this
girl for a really long time, but nev
er really had the nerve to even ap
proach her in the most basic way,
like even having a simple conver
sation.
Finally, after a month or so of to
tal fixation, I finally called her and
flat-out told her how I felt, think
ing that, at the very least, it might
get the whole thing out of my sys
tem and I would be able to move
on. She seemed fine with it,
turned me down politely, and
went on her way. Now, she’s going
to Germany on an exchange pro
gram and won’t be back for a year.
The whole experience has real
ly left me feeling bad about myself
and the life I’ve had up to this
point. I’ve always led sort of an an
tisocial life, mainly because my
friends acted the same way, but
now I find myself wishing that
things could have been different.
I’ve always been the shy, skinny,
awkward kid with acne that did all
the work, sat in the back and never
really reached out beyond his im
mediate friends, who were never
very much help anyway. I just can’t
shake the feeling that my entire life
will be like this, nothing will
change, and I’ll never really be com
fortable with myself. If the first 17
years of my life are indicative of the
next 60 or so, things could get very
bad very fast.
Are these feelings normal? I’m re
ally uneasy about counseling,
which my parents and a friend keep
suggesting. What is going on?
— No-Man’s Land
Dear No-Man,
You’re have the rest of your life
to gain weight (easy), lose the
acne (fairly easy) and gain some
self-confidence (not always easy).
You’re a hero for being so hon
est with this woman. While she
might have rejected your first of
fer know that it won’t always be
this way. Now, when you come
back for your 10-year high school
reunion you can always try to ask
her out again... but this time ask
her in German.
Relax, you’ve just started to
live. You’re not even an adult.
Your mind and body are both still
physically growing. You’re a
work in progress. You’re still get
ting to know yourself. Be patient
and know that this is all totally
normal.
Set goals, get active and do the
things you need to do to be your
personal best. Decide who you
want to be and how you want to
see yourself and take the steps
needed to get there. It takes work,
but you can make it.
If you need counseling, talk to
a counselor at school. It’s normal.
The only difference is that a
counselor is an objective listener
who can help you help yourself
find answers. If there is help
available, seek it out. It’s confi
dential and it’s a great way to un
load what’s on your mind.
As a formerly overweight and
under-appreciated teenager I can
assure you the best years are yet
to come. I never thought high
school was the best time of my
life. I still think the best years are
ahead of me. The more you get to
know yourself, the better it gets.
Take this time to get to know
yourself and start living the best
years of your life tomorrow.
