Avant
continued from page4B
Avant sings about the “one that got
away.” And in “This Time,” he
speaks to breaking up and moving
on from a difficult relationship:
“This time I’m going to tell her
goodbye/ no more hurt in my life/
no more lies/ I think it’s time that
I fly/ leave my troubles behind,”
he sings.
But Avant isn’t perfect; he can’t
seem to get away from the idea of
women as either sex objects or
homemakers. In “Serious,” he
tells a girlfriend that “if you’re se
rious about love, don’t worry
about that,” and to quit bugging
him about rumors he’s unfaithful
and about not calling her when
she pages him. “Quit hating on
me,” he sings, later complaining
about not being able to “get my
‘uh-uh’ on.”
And in “Let’s Make A Deal,”
where he sings “If I didn’t have a
dime/ tell me would you spend
the time/ All I hear is buy me this/
baby girl what’s on your mind/
you said money ain’t a thing to
you,” sticking to the negative
stereotype of women as careless
spenders.
But he redeems himself with
his grand finale, a “serious” song
(“Why”) that addresses some com
plex social issues like homeless
ness and single-parent families,
chastising people to become part
of the solution instead of adding to
the problem. Despite being almost
ruined by a dumb beat that sounds
like someone smacking on a plas
tic cup, the song provides a
chance for Avant to really show off
his vocal acrobatics. We get to hear
his voice soar above a background
chorus sung by a gospel choir.
It’s a spectacular finish. The lis
tener can even get past the some
times preachy lyrics (“Why do
things go the way they do?/every
body I’m asking you/everybody
turn around/ turn around/ why
can’t we turn around?” ... “we all
must take a part/and dig deep in
our hearts” ) and enjoy being in a
slow groove.
Overall, Avant’s cd delivers
smooth melodies, a variety of
beats, and enough slow R&B songs
to keep listeners content until Bri
an McKnight releases his next al
bum.

Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold
who can be consistently counted
on to produce good tunes, “es
sential selection” contains mixes
of songs by Underworld from the
“Trainspotting” soundtrack, and
even a subtle mix of William Or
bit’s revision of “Adagio for
strings.”
This album is a sure bet for any
fan of dance music. The essential
selectors have set a high standard
for themselves. I know that I’m
curious to see who does volume
two.
