ST. LOUIS (AP) — Super Bowl
MVP Kurt Warner had emer
gency surgery for an inflamed
appendix Tuesday.
The quarterback was in good
condition after the operation,
which took about an hour, the St.
Louis Rams said in a statement.
“He’s not in any pain right
now,” his wife, Brenda, said.
“He’s eating clear fluids right
now. He had some jell-O. He’s
doing fine.”
She said her husband was al
ready up and walking around
Tuesday evening. That was
ahead of the schedule Rams
coach Mike Martz expected.
“As far as his participation in
the next minicamp, we’ll have to
wait and see,” Martz said.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) —
Almost four years after the At
lanta Olympics ended, the Inter
national Olympic Committee
said Tuesday it would continue
an investigation into alleged
wrongdoing in the city’s success
ful bid for the 1996 Games.
In a statement, the IOC said the
ethics panel was acting on a re
port submitted to Congress in
September by former Attorney
General Griffin Bell.
Bell’s report detailed lavish
gifts, travel, college scholarships,
job assistance and other perks of

families by the Atlanta bid team.

port, who regained the top rank
ing two days ago, defeated Elena
Dementieva of Russia 6-3,6-2 to
day in her opening match at the
Italian Open.
Another American, Kristina
Brandi, also had an easy time
against a Russian opponent. She
beat 11th-seeded Elena Likhovt
v seva 6-2,6-1 today to advance to
the second round.
Brandi, who reached the
fourth round at this year’s Aus

seeded player to fall in the first
round.
In other matches, No. 9 Anke
Huber of Germany downed
Nathalie Zvereva of Belarus 6-4,
7-5; Corina Morariu of the Unit

Cristea of Romania 3-6,6-3,7-5;
and Chanda Rubin of the United

On Monday, Anne-Gaelle Sidot
of France stopped No. 10 seed

three top players to fall on the
first day of the day-court tuneup
for the French Open.
Today, No. 1 Lindsay Davenport
was to face Elena Dementieva
and No. 5 Monica Seles was to
play Magdalena Maleeva.

Golf Notes
The regular-season tourna
ments are over, the Pacific-10
Championships are over, the
qualifying tournament is over,
and the No. 26 Oregon
women’s golf team has sur
vived it all.
Now there’s just one tourna
ment left in the careers of four
Oregon seniors and their
coach, Renee Baumgartner,
who’s retiring after this season
to take over responsibilities as
assistant athletic director. That
tournament is the NCAA
Championships in Sunriver,
which start in a little over a
week.
“We’re all going to be cele
brating at the championships,”
Baumgartner said about her
last season as coach. “In Ore
gon, which is even better.”
The Ducks have never
placed higher than seventh at
the NCAA Championships,
and have finished in the top 10
only once.
Thank you, OSU
Oregon State did the Ducks
a favor by placing last at the
West Regionals. The Beavers
will still host the NCAA
Championships, but since
they didn’t qualify to play,
Oregon will be the home team.
The Beavers feel that way,
at least.
“The Oregon State players
came up and said, ‘you’re rep
resenting Oregon, play well
for both schools,”’ Baumgart
ner said.

The Crosswater Resort Golf

In September, Oregon
kicked off their season at the
NCAA Fall Preview at Cross

21 teams in the country at that
time. The Ducks placed sev
enth in that tough tournament
and will play under almost the
exact same conditions next
week.
