    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
Indiana coach Bob Knight
has “one last chance” to
keep his job and control
his famous temper.
Suspended, fined and or
dered to apologize, Knight
saved his job Monday by
saying he will try to
change his ways following
an investigation into a
claim that he choked a
player in 1997.
Any act that violates a su
pervised “zero-tolerance
policy” or is deemed to be
embarrassing to the uni
versity will result in his im
mediate dismissal, said
university president Myles
Brand.
Knight’s longtime “pat
tern of inappropriate be
havior ... cannot and will
not be tolerated,” Brand
said.
Knight must sit out three
regular-season games next
season, pay a $30,000 fine,
and issue an apology to
the athletic department
secretary he berated and
threatened in two inci
dents.
“Any failure on coach
Knight’s part to meet
these standards will be
cause for further sanc
tions, up to and including
termination,” Brand said.
The seven-week investi
gation followed accusa
tions by former player Neil
f Reed, who said Knight
choked him during a prac
tice that was caught on
videotape. During the in
quiry, other accusations of
verbal and physical abuse
j emerged.
Knight, who has won
three national champi
onships in his 29 years at
the school, did not attend
the news conference.
Leaving his office in As
bly Hall in Blooming
shortly before the
news conference, Knight
declined to talk to re
porters.
talk now when so
have been
ever giving
a chance to talk?”
Knight said as he walked
away. However, Knight
was repeatedly asked to
comment on the events
and the investigation in re
cent weeks, but consistent
ly declined.
Trustee John Walda read
a statement to reporters in
Indianapolis in which
Knight said: “I recognize I
have a problem with my
temper.... I am sincerely
sorry.”
Walda said the inquiry
did not conclude that
Reed was choked.

One minute you’re a high
school wrestling state cham
pion. It’s your senior year and
you have a scholarship to at
tend college based on your
wrestling skills.
Life is good.
But then life throws you a
wicked curve ball. An oppos
ing wrestling coach finds out
you never took your high
school physical, which is re
quired. The coach protests
and wins.
Just like that, your champi
onship is revoked, and worse,
so is your scholarship. When
you come from a one-parent
household with limited funds,
college suddenly seems like a
far-fetched possibility.
Welcome to the obstacle
