The Blazers
lookahead
By Landon Hall
The Associated Press
PORTLAND — The Portland
Trail Blazers are dutifully spout
ing their “we don’t care who we
play” rhetoric. Truth is, the out
comes of the two first-round
Game 5s in the Western Confer
ence could dramatically a4ter
Portland’s chances of winning
the NBA title.
The Blazers, who have been off
since eliminating the Minnesota
Timberwolves in their first-round
series Tuesday, next face the win
ner of Friday night’s game be
tween Utah and Seattle.
The Blazers dominated both of
those teams during the regular
season, sweeping the SuperSon
ics and winning three of four
from the Jazz. But the Blazers
would much rather face the errat
ic Sonics than a rematch with
Utah, whom Portland beat in a
grueling six-game series last year.
Turning their attention to an
other Game 5 on Friday, the Blaz
ers would absolutely love to see
the Los Angeles Lakers fall to
Sacramento.
Of course, players almost never
take the bait when the inevitable
question arises of whom they’d
like to win and lose.
-—-“(Seattle and Utah) both pose
different types of problems, but it
doesn’t really matter who we
play,” Blazers point guard Da
mon Stoudamire said Thursday.
“I know everybody up here
wants L.A. to lose, but who really
cares? I don’t think we’ll play a
team in the playoffs that will
shoot as well as Minnesota did,
regardless.”
The Timberwolves proved to
be more troublesome than a No. 6
seed should, pushing the B : zers
to the limit in all of the games
Portland won. In Game 4 on
Tuesday, Minnesota led by nine
early in the fourth quarter but
went into a free-fall, missing the
open jumpers they had been hit
ting with regularity most of the
senB5=^T%e~-ThTlf)erwo;lves en
dirred-a similar meltdown in the
fourth quarter of Game 1.
“I’m very happy th^t we were
able to get out of that series in
four,” Scottie Pippen Said. “It was
great that we had an opportunity
to challenge ourselves in a lot of
different areas. They’re a team
that executes very well, and they
gave us an opportunity to really
work on some things that I’m
sure we’re going to need some
where down the road in the play
offs.”
