APRIL FOOL’S DAY (April I)
In sixteenth-century France, the start of
the new year was observed on April I st.
It was celebrated with parties and
dancing, much like our contemporary
festivities. In 1562, a new calendar was
developed for the “Christian
"world” by the Pope, and the
new year was changed to
begin on January 1st. Many
people didn't hear about - or like
the change of date, so they
continued to celebrate on April 1st.
Others played tricks on them and
called them “April’s Fool.”
