right to end the threat.
“I was battling back and forth,”
Vidlund said. “I kept telling my
self all you need to do is get a base
hit. Get a base hit and you might
score two, and we’d be in good
shape.”
In the bottom of the fifth Christi
Shelton belted a double over the
center fielder’s head to start a late
inning rally, only to be stranded
there as the next two hitters failed
to advance her.
“We’re not producing offen
sively and that hurts,” Gamez
said. “We don’t have anybody
that has stepped up and given us
that spark. You’ve got to take ad
vantage of every opportunity. We
had a runner on second base a
couple times and couldn’t get her
across.”
The loss drops the Ducks into a
tie for last with the Beavers.
Gamez is well aware of the added
pressure of the next couple
games. He is surprised with the
lack of effort that his team is put
ting out.

“At this point of time in the
year it’s extremely surprising.
There is no reason why we should
not be giving everything we’ve
got,” Gamez said. “I think it puts
a lot of pressure on us. We have to
come out and play hard tomorrow
and not worry about the Pac-10
race.”
Tomorrow, the Ducks play a
double-header at Portland State.
The games were rescheduled
from last week because of rain.
Both Gamez and Vidlund realize
the importance of the twin-bill,
which precedes three games in
the Bay Area this weekend.
“I think if we win tomorrow,
we’ll be all right,” Vidlund said.
“Our confidence will be back up
and we might even win a few
more.”
Gamez looks to tomorrow’s
contests as crucial to his team’s
turnaround.
“Tomorrow’s game are big,”
Gamez said. “We’ve got to come
out and win both games. We’ve
got to get back on track for the
weekend. That’s why we’ll put
more emphasis on tomorrow than
we are the weekend.”
PAC-10

polls, they’re not supposed to
beat.
Not that polls matter to Ore
gon’s players. Especially because
these were games the Ducks
could have won. They’re games
that they were agonizingly close
to winning. Three times against
Oregon State (27-12-1, 1-6) the
Ducks had runners in scoring po
sition but didn’t capitalize.
“We’re just as good as these
other teams, we just have to prove
it,” McMurren said.
Senior center fielder Jill Robin
son concurred.
“It’s so frustrating right now be
cause I think each individual is
giving it her all,” the senior leader
said. “It’s just a matter of time....
I’m not worried.”
Head coach Rick Gamez isn’t
quite so secure.
“There’s a lack of drive,” he
said. “Our kids are not giving
everything they’ve got... and that
does get frustrating. That hurts.”
McMurren and Robinson both
said that Oregon has enough de
sire and confidence left to turn
things around, to get back into the
brutal Pac-10 race. It’s just a mat
ter of figuring out how, exactly.
“I don’t know why we’re not
getting it done,” Robinson said.
“All I know is that it can’t go on.”
