Martinez leads Red Sox to 2-0 win
SEATTLE — Pedro Martinez
started this season the same way
he ended last year — with pure
dominance.
Martinez struck out 11 and
held Seattle to only two hits in
seven innings Tuesday night,
pitching the Boston Red Sox past
the Mariners 2-0 in the first open
er at Safeco Field.
Playing their first season with
out Ken Griffey Jr. since 1989, the
Mariners could not touch Mar
tinez. The right-hander was the
unanimous AL Cy Young winner
last season after going 23-4 with a
2.07 ERA and 313 strikeouts.
Martinez said he would not try
to duplicate his 1999 numbers.
“I wouldn’t look for it,” he said.
“Those are special seasons. They
don’t come every day. You have
to take those, just like the bad
ones, and forget about it.”
“You can’t think about trying to
do the same things,” he said. “It’s
too hard. You’d go crazy before
you pitch the first game. I mean,
those things just happen.”
Martinez finished last year
with 17 shutout innings in the
postseason. He did not come
close to allowing a run against
Seattle — he has given up only
one earned run in his last 42 in
nings.
Brewers 5, Reds 1
CINCINNATI (AP) — Ken Grif
fey Jr. stayed hitless in Cincinnati
while Jeromy Burnitz homered
twice Tuesday night, leading the
Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-1 vic
tory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Davey Lopes got his first victo
ry as manager in the makeup of
Monday’s opener, a 3-3 tie called
in the sixth inning because of
rain.
Burnitz, who hit seven homers
in spring training, had solo shots
in the first and ninth for the
eighth multi-homer game of his
career. The Brewers won by scor
ing four runs off the league’s
stingiest bullpen last season.
Dante Bichette’s misplay in
right field let in the go-ahead run
in the seventh, and the Brewers
loaded the bases and scored two
more in the eighth.
Griffey was greeted with flash
bulbs each time he came to bat
and failed to get the ball out of the
infield for the second game in a
row. He struck out twice and
grounded out twice, leaving him
0-for-6 overall.
The same fans who wrapped
themselves in rain ponchos and
hid under umbrellas on Monday
wound up huddling under blan
kets for the rerun, which featured
little offense until late.
Burnitz hit a solo homer in the
first off left-hander Denny Neagle
and Dmitri Young matched it in
the fifth off left-hander Valerio De
Los Santos.
Milwaukee took the lead again
in the seventh, when Henry Blan
co drew a walk from Scott
Williamson (0-1), making his first
appearance since winning the NL
Rookie of the Year award. Mar
quis Grissom hit the ball sharply
towards the right-field corner
with two out, and Bichette tried
to cut it off.
Bichette, who had a fielding er
ror in the opener, had the ball de
flect off his glove before he kicked
it away as he lost his balance and
spun on the turf. Grissom wound
up on third and was awarded a
triple — a decision booed by the
fans when it was flashed on the
scoreboard.
Milwaukee loaded the bases
with none out in the eighth
against the bullpen and scored on
Jose Hernandez’s single and a
walk to Kevin Barker by Scott
Sullivan.
Dodgers 10, Expos 4
MONTREAL — Gary
Sheffield’s two-run homer off
Hideki Irabu highlighted a seven
run third inning Tuesday night,
and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat
the Montreal Expos 10-4 for the
second straight game.
Los Angeles had 17 hits, in
cluding eight off Irabu (0-1), who
was making his National League
debut.
The 30-year-old Japanese right
hander, acquired from the Yan
kees in a Dec. 22 trade orchestrat
ed by new owner Jeffrey Loria,
gave up six runs and two walks in
two-plus innings, including a
leadoff homer to Devon White in
the first.
Chan Ho Park (1-0) allowed
four runs — three earned — and
six hits in six innings.
Los Angeles had seven straight
hits in its big inning. Mark
Grudzielanek, one of two Dodgers
with three hits, singled leading off
and Sheffield homered to put the
Dodgers ahead.
Giants 3, Marlins 0
MIAMI — Russ Ortiz made
Florida look much more like,
well, the Marlins on Tuesday
night.
A night after totaling 12 hits
and six runs in front of a sellout
crowd, Florida managed just four
hits off Ortiz and lost to the San
Francisco Giants 3-0 before 9,524
fans.
Ortiz (1-0) pitched eight in
nings, striking out five and allow
ing three walks. He went 18-9
with a 3.81 ERA last season, and
the Giants won 23 of his 33 starts.
He picked up right where he
left off.
