land.
The University’s code, which
was unanimously approved by
the committee of students, staff
and faculty that created it, will re
quire all University trademark li
censees and all the companies
they contract with to adhere to a
set of a labor standards.
The standards require that li
censees: pay “a dignified living
wage;” ensure “a safe and healthy
working environment;” and pro
tect employees’ rights to form la
bor unions. Other provisions of
the code call for protection from
harassment and abuse on the job.
According to the current time
line, the code, if approved by the
University Senate and ultimately
Frohnmayer, will go into effect as
part of licensing contracts re
newed or initiated this June.
The code will not affect the
University’s contract with Nike in
the short term because it does not
come up for renewal until May
31,2003, said Matt Dyste, Univer
sity merchandising director.
In addition to submitting the
draft to Frohnmayer, the Licens
ing Code of Conduct Committee
recommended that the University
choose the Worker Rights Consor
tium to monitor the conduct of its
licensees.
While Frohnmayer has not
committed to joining the WRC, he
said Tuesday, “I’m usually in
clined to adopt the recommenda
tions of a committee that has done
its work carefully.”
“Given.enough latitude, the
University can steer its way sensi
bly and yet guided by a set of
principles that protect us from
unknowingly endorsing unsafe or
exploitative labor practices,” he
said.
