Very little fun in the sun for UO
■ A career

Arizona proved hot indeed
as the No. 23 Oregon softball
team dropped two of three in
the desert during the weekend.
The Ducks (24-12 overall, 1-2
Pacific-10) sandwiched two loss
es around a lone win to open
conference play. The team start
ed the weekend out somewhat
promisingly, losing a 3-2 battle to
No. 2 Arizona Friday, followed
by a 10-0 shellacking of No. 5
Arizona Saturday. But the Ducks
were unable to gain any momen
tum, dropping the final game of
the trip, 7-3 to Arizona State.
“We had a tough time,” Ore
gon head coach Rick Gamez said
in a released statement.
The trip to the Valley of the
Sun did have a bright spot in
sophomore infielder Chirsti
Shelton. The Phoenix-native
hit her first two home runs and
knocked in six RBIs during the
three-game
stretch.
Sunday’s
loss dropped

.500 and
handed freshman Andrea
Vilund (12-4) her first confer
ence loss. After beating the Sun
Devils the previous day, the
Ducks found themselves chas
ing the home team all day.
Arizona State jumped out to
an early lead and never looked
back, scoring two runs in the
bottom of the first. Kara Brun
had an RBI single and Sara
Kahler an RBI double, putting
the Sun Devils up 2-0.
Oregon then answered in the
top of the third on Shelton’s sec
ond round-tripper in as many
days, closing the gap to 2-1.
Arizona State extended the
lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the
inning, causing the Ducks to re
move starter Vidlund, replacing
her with senior Danielle Haag.
The Sun Devils then scored
two more runs in the bottom of
the fifth, which pushed the
lead to 7-1.

Rising to the occasion has
been the trademark of Oregon
men’s tennis this season. In four
matchups with top-25 teams,
the Ducks played well and left
nothing on the court.
Unfortunately, they have lost
all four of these matches.
Long odds faced the Ducks as
they traveled to Seattle to face Pa
cific-10 conference foe Washing
ton. The No. 22 Huskies came
into the match with a 12-5 record
and a three-match win streak.
The Ducks captured the dou
bles point on wins by the No. 47
duo of senior Guillermo Carter
and freshman Leslie Eisinga
and sophomore Thomas
Schneiter and freshman Oded
Teig.
Schneiter and Teig continued
their success in singles play.
Schneiter defeated No. 86 Ari
Strasberg, 6-3,6-1. Teig won for
the seventh time in eight match
es with a win over Andy
Posavac,6-3,6-2.
The Huskies then killed any
hopes of an upset by winning
the remaining four singles
matches. Senior Joaquin Ham
dan and freshman Jason Menke
lost grueling, three-set matches.
“The guys had them in a bat
tle,” head coach Chris Russell
said in a released statement. “I
think this is the closest we’ve
come to beating Washington in
a long time. It was looking favor
able, but we came up just a bit
short.”
Oregon falls to 9-6, and 0-3
Pac-10.
On Friday the Ducks hosted
their first outdoor match of the
season. They dominated Mon
tana 7-0 to win their final non
conference match.
In doubles play, the Ducks set
the tone for the match, sweeping
Montana in impressive fashion.
Hamdan defeated former Ore
gon player Justin Lindbloom.

Senior Cedric Van Haver
played for the first time in a dual
match this season, defeating the
Grizzlies’ Eric Metzger 6-1, 5-7,
6-2.
It wouldn’t look like it from
the box scores, but the Oregon
women’s tennis team also made
significant improvements since
last playing Washington and
Washington State.
The Ducks traveled to Wash
ington this weekend to conclude
their Pac-10 conference season
