    Colorful ‘Carmina Burana’ returns for an encore run
The Eugene Ballet Company is bringing back ‘Carmina Bu
rana’, a combination of song, dance and music performed
in collaboration with the Eugene Ballet, Oregon Mozart
Players, Eugene Concert Choir, Sandra Williams Youth Cho
rus and soloists.
Toni Pimble, who has won awards for her work, choreo
graphed the ballet to a musical score by Carl Orff.

ements of human nature. Classical composer Carl Orff set
the poems to music in 1937, and it was presented as a total
theater piece for the first time in 1959.
The last time the Eugene Ballet presented ‘Carmina Bu
rana’ in 1994, the show sold out.
The show runs three times this weekend at the Hult Center.
Tickets range from $17 to $60 and are available through
the Huh Center Ticket Office at 682-5000 or on-line at

Saturday Market
season begins
The Eugene Saturday Market,
the oldest open-air crafts festival
in the nation, will open for the
season Saturday, April 1.
Live entertainment this week
end includes a performance by
folk and baroque artist Chip Co
hen at 10 a.m. and a children’s
entertainment hour at 11 a.m.
At noon, there will be an April
Fool’s Day parade and perform
ance by the “local chapter” of
Accordions Anonymous, and at
1:30 p.m-.-; the wind quartet Un
stuck In Time will perform.
Opening Day festivities conclude
at 3 p.m. with the traditional
first-Saturday-in-April perform
ance by Shumba, playing festive
marimba music from Zimbabwe.
Each Saturday, the market in
cludes over 300 vendors, 24 food
booths and weekly live entertain
ment.
This season, the market will be
open every Saturday from 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m., regardless of the weath
er.
Parking is free, and valet bike
parking is provided by the Center
for Appropriate Transport.

UO hosts chamber operas
The Oregon Opera Ensemble
will perform two chamber operas
and present vocal selections
from other popular operas at 8
p.m. April 4 in Beall Concert
Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave.
Graduate and undergraduate
students will perform Samuel
Barbe’s “A Hand of Bridge” and
Seymour Barab’s “A Game of
Change.”
The chamber operas will be
presented with costuming and
simple staging.
Piano accompaniment will be
by Kumiko Shimizu and Lynn
-Riihimaki.
Other selections on the pro
gram include music from “The
Magic Flute” by Mozart, “Der
Rosenkavalier” by Strauss,
“Daughter of the Regiment” by
Donizetti and “Otello” by Verdi.
Tickets are available at the
door, and are $5 general admis
sion and $3 for students and sen
ior citizens.
The concert is the first in a line
of concerts and musical events
scheduled for the University of
Oregon School of Music’s spring
term.

—“Rent” due at Hult Center
The Tony Award-winning mu
sical “Rent” will be performed at
the Hult Center April 4 -9.
Show times will be at 8 p.m.
April 4-7, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
April 8, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
April 9.
The drama, a modem remake
of La Boheme, centers around
the lives of several East Villagers,
who are coping with AIDS, drug
addictions, and relationships.
Tickets are $25 -$45, and a stu
dent discount is available.
