UO men, women extend streaks
■ The men’s tennis team
while the men hope to halt
a four-match slide today
By Robbie McCallum
for the Emerald
After a week layover for finals,
the Oregon men’s and women’s
tennis teams find themselves trav
eling in opposite directions.
After a 6-1 win in their home
opener, the men rattled off three
wins to up their win streak to five.
The Ducks swept San Francisco
and got a 4-2 win against Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo. On Mar. 25, Ore
gon beat Hawaii 5-1 in Honolulu.
Guillermo Carter, the Ducks
36th-ranked senior captain, ex
tended his personal win streak to
five with three wins. Freshmen
Oded Teig and Leslie Eisinga also
went 3-0 on the trip.
“We just
need to build
confidence, ”
head coach
Chris Russell
said in a re
leased state
ment. “We’re
playing some good tennis right
now.”
On the women’s side, a devas
tating loss to Washington State on
March 5 sent them into a tailspin.
The Ducks lost two matches in
Las Vegas over the break, making
their overall record'5-9.
The No. 43 Ducks faced an op
ponent similar to themselvesin
No. 40 Tulsa. The teams were
deadlocked 3-3 after singles play.
Doubles play, Oregon’s weak
spot, proved to be the difference
in the match. Tulsa swept all
three doubles to prevail, 6-3.
Three days later, the Ducks fell
victim to an upset. On March 22,
unranked Nevada-Las Vegas up
ended Oregon 6-3 on its home
court. UNLV’s top three players
defeated Oregon’s top three play
ers.
• “We let a lot of close matches
slip away,” head coach Jack Griffin
said.” It was a difficult day.”
Oregon golfers on par over break
■ The men s and women’s
golf teams perform
impressively during break
By Peter Hockaday
for the Emerald
In a^game of inches, the Oregon
men’s golf team came from miles
behind but fell short at its only
home tournament of the year.
Trailing by eight going into the
final round, the Ducks missed a
two-peat at their own Duck Invi
tational on March 20 and 21 by a
single stroke. Oregon scored a
team total 858. Tournament win
ner Washington scored 857 at the
Shadow Hills Country Club.
Consistency from top to bottom
of the roster secured the Ducks’
silver medal. They shot 50 birdies
over three rounds of under-par
golf.
Oregon head coach Steve
Nosier said “three straight
rounds of under-par golf by our
team is very good.”
Junior T.J. Duncan continued
his impressive play. After an
eighth place, one-under par per
formance at the Southwestern In
tercollegiate in February, Duncan
paced the Ducks at the Oregon In
vitational. He finished in fifth
with a two-under 214 in his best
performance yet in an Oregon
uniform.
Junior Matt Genovese (216, tied
for 10th) and freshman Chris Car
nahan (219, Tl9th) gave the
Ducks strong performances. Se
nior co-captains Ryan Lavoie and
Andrew Tredway (221, T26th)
also placed for the Ducks.
While the men fell just short at
the Duck Invitational, the
women’s golf team blew out its
competition at the Colby Invita
tional in Carmel, Calif., taking the
tournament by a whopping 10
strokes.
The Ducks were aided by the
one-two-three finishes of senior
captain Kylie Wilson, fellow sen
ior Angie Rizz6 and junior Jerilyn
White. The three golfers finished
a mere three strokes apart.
The win moved Oregon to 24th
in the national rankings.
The women are in San Diego
today for the Executive Women’s
Golf Association/Lady Aztec In
vitational. The two-round, 36
hole tournament features 20
teams, but only two ranked teams
other than Oregon.
The tournament will be the
second-to-last regular season out
ing for the Ducks before they host
the Pacific-10 Conference Cham
pionships at the Eugene Country
Club April 24th through 26th.
