■Oregon finished its season
with another Pac-10 title and
now prepares to host the
NCAA Tournament
By Scott Pesznecker
Oregon Daily Emerald
The new millennium’s first sea
son of Pacific-10 Conference play
will always be remembered as a
season of parity.
But when all was said and done,
one team alone remained on top.
And it sure did it with style.
The Ducks won their first out
right title in school history and
will host the
NCAA tourna
ment for just the
second time ever.
Oregon left no
doubt which Pac
10 team was best
when it beat Ore
gon State, 60-53,
on Friday night in front of a sellout
crowd of 9,087 — the second
largest in school history.
Point guard Shaquala Williams
claimed the honor of 2000 Pac-10
Player of the Year and came away
from conference play as just the
fourth player in Pac-10 history to
earn All-Conference honors in her
first two seasons.
Forward Angelina Wolvert was
named to the All-Pac-10 team for
the first time in her career.
And senior Nicole Strange, who
enjoyed her final season as one of
the nation’s best midrange shoot
ers, walked away a winner from
her final Pac-10 game.
To say the least, it was a good
year for Oregon women’s basket
ball.
But it’snot over yet.
That challenge: To beat UAB

round and advance past the sec
ond round of the tournament,
which has never before happened
for Oregon.
In a season riddled with career
defining moments, a first-ever
Sweet-16 berth seems fitting.
The tournament “sets the stage
for this year, but I think it also sets
the stage for next year,” Williams
said. “We haven’t had a great tour
nament in the past; we never really
got over the hump. I think this year
is our opportunity.”
Like the Ducks’ conference
matchups, their second-straight
Conference USA matchup is not
without its underlying story lines
— Oregon head coach Jody Runge
had a two-year stint as an assistant
coach for the UAB Blazers.
