UO rugby grapples with OSU ■ The Oregon men’s rugby team beats Oregon State, but the women’s team isn’t as successful By Shigenari Matsu moto for the Emerald The Oregon Club Sports men’s rugby team (5-0) won the North west league championship by defeating Oregon State (4-2) 24 18 at Corvallis Saturday. “We have a good club,” Ore gon coach Bob Snyder said. “We should represent the Northwest league pretty well.” The win ends a 15-year losing streak against the Beavers. “As a player I never lost to the Beavers but this is my first win as a coach,” Snyder said. “I am proud of the players who really practiced hard.” Ducks’ scrum half Michael Her man agrees that practice payed off. “We came out as team,” Herman said. “We worked hard as team and that made us come out on the top.” The win allows the Ducks to host the National tournament against Cal-State Chico on April 1. If the Ducks win, they will probably face the reigning nation al champion Golden Bears. “I am very happy that the team is going to the play-offs,” senior Jacob Hays said. “The team gets a chance to show what it can do at a national level by competing against the best in the country.” Snyder said he likes the chances against Chico State but that the team still needs to work on its offense. “The backs were able to ad vance the ball but we couldn’t fin ish,” Snyder said. “We need to work on finishing the game.” The Ducks will play an exhibi tion match against California on March 18 at California. Theomen’s rugby team (3-2) lost to Oregon State (5-0) 37-12 at Corvallis on Saturday. The Ducks’ only lead came when wing Kelsey Christianson scored a try amidst the celebration of the men’s rugby team’s win, which ended a few minutes before the women’s game. “I was pretty excited about the try, but I wanted to keep it going,” Kelsey said. The Ducks managed to score on a Hillary Giorgio try but after that it was all Beavers. “Oregon State players were coming to the ruck quicker, hard er and lower so we were being pushed around,” Sherri Michl said. “OSU was really controlling the ball and that was where we re ally lost it.” Kelsey said the Ducks were a down and frustrated about the of ficials’ calls and their own per formance. “I think we had a good chance of winning but we made way too much mistakes,” Kelsey said. Oregon coach Sean Peters said the Beavers simply played better and though the loss is disapoint ing, players should keep their heads up. “We still will play in postsea son games and I think we have a good chance of winning.” The Ducks either face Califor nia, Chico or Stanford on March 26 in the first round of the Nation al tournament at Corvallis. Raptors crush Blazers, winning fifth straight By Landon Hall The Associated Press PORTLAND (AP) — Vince Carter scored 35 points and Doug Christie added 26 as the Toronto Raptors hit a season-high 13 3 pointers to easily beat Portland 109-90 on Monday night. The Raptors won their fifth in a row and fourth straight on the road, a franchise record. Toronto moved a half-game ahead of Philadelphia for the No. 4 spot in the Eastern Conference. Rasheed Wallace scored a sea son-high 27 and Arvydas Sabo nis had 16 points and 11 re bounds to lead the Blazers, who have lost two of their last three home games after winning 16 straight. Carter, who began the night as the NBA’s fourth-leading scorer at 25.5 points per game, is aver aging 30.6 points over his last 15 games. The Blazers weathered a 15-0 run in the second quarter, but folded after Toronto reeled off 13 straight points in the third. A 21 foot baseline jumper by Antonio Davis put the Raptors ahead 62 54, and Portland couldn’t get closer than four after that. Carter was playing his first game ever at the Rose Garden, and he treated the crowd to an exhibition of long-distance shooting along with a flashy dunk. Carter shot 4-of-5 from 3 point range. Christie was 5-of-9. The Blazers had a nine-point lead in the second quarter, but it quickly vanished when the sec ond unit came in. After a jumper by Stacey Aug mon, the Raptors went on their 15-0 run, highlighted by one of Carter’s poster-worthy dunks on a lob from Muggsy Bogues. A re verse layup by Kevin Willis gave Toronto a 40-34 lead. Portland responded, and Wal lace one-upped Carter with a powerful one-handed slam over Antonio Davis to put the Blazers ahead 45-44. Greg Anthony con verted a three-point play after a goaltending violation on Carter to give Portland a 52-47 halftime lead. Blazers’ point guard Damon Stoudamire missed his second straight game after injuring his left knee in last week’s home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. With a bigger, less quick lineup, the Blazers didn’t run the open court well and turned the ball over 17 times. The Raptors scored 62 points in the second half, and Carter and Christie combined to shoot 7-of-ll from 3-point range in the final two quarters. The Blazers pulled to 65-61 on a turnaround shot off the glass by Rasheed Wallace with 5:26 left in the third. But Charles Oakley hit a 23-foot jumper, and Carter tipped home his own miss to make it 71-63. Dell Curry’s 3 pointer with 6.5 seconds left in the period made it an 81-70 lead. Notes: With Stoudamire out, Scottie Pippen played the point and Detlef Schrempf started at small forward, his sixth start of the season and first since Jan. 14. Schrempf scored seven points. ...
