Smith By Jeff Smith Oregon Daily Emerald Men’s Notes Good news Oregon basket ball fans: The Ducks ended their two-game losing skid and have a chance to finish no worse than third-place in the Pacific-10 Conference with a win over Arizona State on Thursday. But the bad news certainly outweighs the good. Oregon’s senior co-captain ~,x A.D. Smith is out for the re nosed with a fractured left cheek bone and will miss the fi nal games at McArthur Court in his Oregon Duck career. But ac cording to team physician Dr. Bob Crist, it is still possible for him to return to action in the postseason. Smith will undergo surgery today to reset the cheekbone. Needless to say, the loss is a devastating one for the Ducks as they close the season with games against Arizona State, Arizona and Oregon State, re spectively. Smith scored a com bined 58 points in the previous games against them. “Obviously it’s going to affect us a great deal,” head coach Ernie Kent said. “He’s one of our lead ers that has been consistent all year long. McArthur Court was already celebrating Oregon’s win against then-No. 22 UCLA when the Bruins’ Marie Phillman clobbered Lindsey Dion from behind as she went up for a break away layup. “She got crunched,” head coach Jody Runge said. “She was on her back, her legs were bent and they landed on top of her. It gave her quite a shot of pain.” After the two tumbled to the floor, Phillman sprang up.
