The world of hip-hop music,
Eugene style, gets a big-time
showcase Friday night at Top of
the World. Fourteen acts are
scheduled to perform at the con
cert, which benefits the Lane
Community College Hip-Hop Stu
dent Union.
Although a few of Friday’s
artists have performed every
where from Miami to Seattle to
New York City, a few will be get
ting their first major exposure.
“Four years ago, I started rap
pin’ stuff and it’s more like some
thing you just do as a pastime,”
says Gabriel Sechrist, a business
administration student at both the
University and LCC. “Everybody I
spoke to did pretty much the same
thing — they had written lyrics,
they had made songs, they pre
sented them to their friends, but
no one had beats or music, and es
pecially no venue to perform at.
