Sports brief The Duck golfers end up 14th in Arizona At least they’re consistent. The Oregon lady golfers fin ished in a tie for 14th place at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson Wednesday despite a second-round effort that should have earned them a better spot. The Ducks’ team scores im proved sharply Tuesday after a poor first round on Monday, but the players returned to high scores in the final round yesterday. Every Oregon team member posted a third round score that was worse than their second round effort. Junior Jerilyn White led Ore gon with a six-over par 222. White ended the tournament in a tie for 32nd place. Senior Anika Heuser (10-over par 226) finished in 50th place. Seniors Pam Sowden and Angie Rizzo (11-over, 227) finished a stroke behind Heuser in a tie for 57th. Sophomore Julia Smith (31-over, 247) ended up 96th of 96 golfers. Oregon has a month off before the Colby Santa Clara Invitational ' in Monterey, Calif, on March 20. By Peter Hockaday for the Emerald Jenny Mowe continued from page 9A ny, now a 21-year-old redshirt junior, has come far, but she still has a long way to go. Her num bers this season are 5.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in less than 20 minutes per game. Unquestionably, there’s un tapped potential. “There are times, especially on the road, when she doesn’t play like Jenny Mowe,” Runge says. “Because she’s concerned about getting in foul trouble. We’ve talked about it, if she gets five fouls in five minutes, then five minutes of Jenny Mowe is better than her playing the other way. That’s what we expect from her, to be the force she can be. “She hasn’t achieved her poten tial yet. The inconsistent part of her game is the difference be tween her being a great pro player and someone who is just a big body.” Jenny Mowe intends to play in the WNBA. And you can’t help but want to see her do it. She’d be an inspira tion to children all over the coun try. “I could watch little kids all day long,” Jenny says. “I get the biggest kick out of them. They are so funny; they’re like natural co medians, and they don’t even re alize it. Hilarious, the things they come up with. Kids come up and want me to sign the bottom of their shoes. “So many people hate kids, but how can you hate kids? They’re just little tiny usses, little usses run ning around doing dumb things.” Worst (and best) part of watch ing women’s games at Mac Court: the nonstop shrieking. “Jenny, Jenny, Jenny! We love you, Jenny!” It’ll make your ears ring. Or—if Jenny fouls out — your heart break. Because kids start sobbing every time the refs pick on No. 34. Their hero is both appreciative and deserving of that type of love. After every game, regardless of the result or her performance, Jenny makes her way back up to floor level, takes her position in the hallway, and signs. And signs, and signs and signs. “No matter how she feels, and sometimes she’s dying inside be cause she’s had a bad game, she will put on a happy face and go out and sign autographs,” Patty says. “Because she loves the fans.” Jenny Mowe has won a Pac 10 title, traveled the world as a member of the U.S.A. junior national team and is currently No. 5 on the confer ence’s all-time blocked-shots list, Kevin Caiame Emerald Jenny Mowe ‘gets a kick’ out of kids. And in turn, they get a kick out of her. with 162, She has won the hearts of thou sands of fans in Eugene and around the state. Mowe has a 40 foot tall poster of herself on the outside corner of Mac Court, and the center can’t go anywhere in public without being recognized. But Jenny will never forget Powers. She continues to visit her fami ly, now happy to help out with her chores. She still goes to her high school gym and plays fero cious games of one-on-one with her younger brother, Jeremy. Of course, she sees Jack and Elmo. “Last summer, she came dawn and spent a couple of hours with us,” Elmo says. “She comes into the basketball game and sits down beside me and pulls her hat down, and of course, I didn’t know who it was. I was wondering who the heck was giving me a bad time, and so I looked over and there was Jenny.” Powers won’t forget her, ei ther.
