Oregon squeaks out huge win at Cal
Seniors A.D.
Smith and

hard-fought
64-60 victory
over
California.

Talent can only take a
team so far. Sooner or later,
a team needs senior leader
ship to rise over the hump
into the higher echelon of
college basketball.
When the chips were
down, Oregon’s seniors
A.D. Smith and Alex Scales
rose to the occasion. The
Ducks rode the inspiration
of their two poised warriors
to an important 64-60 win
against California on Satur
day.
It was a huge win for Ore
gon (17-5 overall, 8-3 Pacif
ic-10 Conference), which
bounced back from a tough
loss at Stanford to keep sole
possession of third place in
the Pac-10 with seven
games to go, five of which
are at McArthur Court.
If the Ducks keep their
composure down the
stretch and earn a bid to the
NCAA Tournament, the
play ' of
Smith and
Scales
against the
Golden
Bears will
be a major
reason.
The two seniors scored 21
points apiece, and no shot
was more important than
Scales’ three pointer late in
the game that halted Califor
nia’s comeback bid.
Darius Wright’s first —
and only — field goal put
the Ducks ahead by seven
with 5:09 remaining, but it
wouldn’t last long. Oregon’s
lead disintegrated to one
point after the Golden
Bears’ Joe Shipp scored on a
putback with 40 seconds
left.
Oregon called what Kent
refers to as a “composure
timeout,” clinging to a one
point lead with 38 seconds
left. Kent figured that Califor
nia would collapse on Smith
underneath, which would
open up the perimeter and
leave Scales an open shot or
an opportunity to drive.

Oregon had a simple plan
to beat struggling California
at McArthur Court on Satur
day: get on a hot streak and
watch the opponent melt
under the pressure.
On paper, the plan should
have worked. The Bears Eire
far from being a tournament
team, and they’re plagued
with injuries. Last Thursday
the Bears mustered just 33
points in an embarrassing
loss at Oregon State — not
quite a confidence booster.
But instead of getting
bruised, the Bears became
the bruiser. Cal surprised
the Ducks with a solid game
and nearly pulled out the
upset, cutting Oregon’s lead
to three points with five

they had their work

facing the most solid post
players in the Pac-10.
Six-foot-5 Jenny Mowe is
always an imposing, swat
ting presence. Brianne
Mehany and Angelina
Wolvert’s spin moves and
pump fakes are a pain to de

And lately Jody Runge
has thrown Alyssa Fredrick
