Ducks face top competition
■ Both the Oregon men’s
and women’s tennis teams
are in action this weekend
By Robbie McCallum
for the Emerald
So far, this 1999-0200
women’s tennis season has been
highlighted by extremes.
The Ducks began the season
with two losses against two of
the top teams in the nation. They
then followed with dominating
wins against two weaker oppo
nents.
And the season continues this
weekend when the Los Angeles
schools come to town.
Oregon is
continuing a
monthrlong
homestand.
The Ducks
are looking to
even their Pa
cific-10 con
f e r e n c e
record, which
currently
stands at 0-2.
Oregon faces No. 8'UCLA today
1:30 p.m. at the Willow Creek
Racquet Club. The Bruins (3-1,
Pac-10) are led by 66th-ranked
Sarah Walker and 85th-ranked
Anica Cooper. Walker and Petya
Martin are ranked are ranked 19th
in doubles competition.
The Ducks take on USC tomor
row at the Eugene Swim and
Tennis Club at noon. The No. 12
Trojans are 5-1 and fourth
ranked Jewell Peterson shares
the top position with Kara Wor
ketin.
Oregon head coach Jack Griffin
is optimistic about this week
end’s contests. “Obviously UCLA
and USC are both solid teams,”
Griffin said. “Both ranked among
the top in the country. If we want
to be a top-20 team, we’ve got to
face these teams.”

Sarah Colistro and the Ducks hope to take advantage of playing at home, because
they certainly have their work cut out for them against No. 6 UCLA and No. 12 USC.
Both L.A. schools faced No. 31
Arizona last week and had
mixed results. USC dominated
the Wildcats, 9-0, while handing
higher-ranked UCLA its first loss,
5-4.
“Arizona is No. 31 in the coun
try and they upset UCLA, so
we’re in a position that we can
upset these teams,” Griffin said.
“Our concerns is that we can ex
ecute and play our best.”
The Oregon men’s tennis team
is also in action this weekend.
The Ducks travel to Malibu, Calif,
to take on 8th-ranked Pepper
dine. The Waves are 6-0 this sea
son with impressive wins over
UCLA and Hawaii. Veterans John
Hui and Anthony Ross lead the
defending Big West champions.
Ross and Sebastian Graeff are the
third-ranked doubles team in the
nation.
The Ducks warmed up for the
Pepperdine match by disman
tling Portland on Wednesday in
Portland. Oregon swept the Pi
lots 7-0, winning all singles and
doubles matches.
“The guys played well
tonight,” said men’s head
coach Chris Russell. “They re
ally asserted themselves in a
way that showed we’re the bet
ter team. You could see they re
ally felt confident on the
court.”
Softball brief
Softball gets started
After reaching the NCAA Re
gional for the second straight year
in 1999, the Oregon softball team
(40-28 overall last season) gets
back in action this weekend at the
Texas-Arlington/Isuzu Motors In
vitational in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The Ducks start play today
against Tulsa, Bethune-Cookman
and Southwest Texas.
This weekend’s play marks the
first step in Oregon’s quest to
reach the College World Series at
the end of May.
The Ducks are coming off a
historically successful season last
year.
Ten records were broken, as
were one career record, six indi
vidual single-season records —
including Katie Mackey’s new
single-season home run record
of 14 — and three team single
season records.
