areas. Each time a school is up for
reaccreditation it must produce a
“self-study,” which the board
members compare to what they
see on their visit.
Tim Gleason, dean of the school
of journalism and communication,
said he was encouraged by what
the report said. In terms of diversi
ty, ‘“keep working at it’ is essential
ly what they said,” he said.
The report acknowledged that
the school had succeed in attract
ing more students of color and that
the number of women faculty
members has gone up. The number
of faculty members of color, how
ever, has gone from four to two.
Gleason said the school is com
mitted to recruiting a more diverse
staff and that the success in one
area, such as gaining women and
minority faculty, is entwined with
success in other areas, such as in
corporating more diversity issues
into the curriculum.
Melanie Marconi, a sophomore
pre-journalism major, said she
does not see a problem in terms of
diversity.
“I don’t feel oppressed as a
woman in the j-school,” she said.
“What I’ve learned in classes was
very diversified and unbiased.”
Monday, the board met with stu
dents from all sequences and
asked general questions about the
school. The students said they ap
preciated the faculty but areas
such as software training needed
improvement. All sequences broke
into small groups on Tuesday.
Some groups were as small as two.
Gleason, who also serves on vis
iting accrediting teams to other
schools, said it is always a chal
lenge to get students to participate.
"I wish that a lot more students
had participated,” he said.
Gregory Jeremiah Kerber, a sen
ior magazine major said, “I think
the students who were there repre
sent the few students who are real
ly active in their education. It’s the
extra things that end up making
the difference.”
Marconi was one of six students
who participated in the public-re

ing to participate and see why the
school is accredited, she said.
Anderson, who is the dean of
the College of Communications at
Penn State, said out of500 schools
in the country that offer journalism
degrees, only 109 are accredited.
“At the very least it means those
programs have met the standards
set in 1945,” Anderson said. He
said some companies only hire
employees from accredited col
leges and universities.
According to the report, the jour
nalism school has “an academical

anced faculty that students praise
for their accessibility and their de
manding, yet caring, style.”
Another strength the board
found that the school had was “an
overall supportive atmosphere”
and a “respected leadership that
effectively balances internal and
external responsibilities.”
Of the process and evaluation,
Gleason said: “I think it’s a very fair
process — valuable to us in im
proving what we are doing and rec
ognizing what we are doing well.”
