Mystery
continued from page 6B
he says.
This genre of theatre does not
fit the traditional mold of perfor
mance, with actors who are sepa
rated from the audience by an in
visible wall.
“It’s a show that exists in the
fourth dimension, rather than the
third,” Miller says.
This weekend’s show will be
more generic, Miller says, to feel
out the area and see if it’s con
ducive to the art form. An engage
ment party will set the scene. The
audience should feel like it is at
tending the real engagement of a
friend’s daughter or something
similar, he explains.
“The idea is to portray as close
to real life as possible,” he ex
plains.
That doesn’t mean viewers
have to participate, however.
There has to be a certain amount
of improvisation used to accom
modate different types of crowds
and each show is completely dif
ferent for this reason, Miller says.
Even the number of actors can
vary between Saturday and Sun
day’s performances. Freshness is
further maintained because the ac
tors have the flexibility of adapting
their characters to fit their real
mood on any given night.
“Anything goes, [and] there is
no censorship or rules,” Miller
says. There is also no script,
though the troupe loosely follows
an original storyline, and tension
mounts all evening.
“All anyone knows is that some
body is going to die,” he adds.
Aiter being introduced to mystery
theatre while working in California,
Miller says he let the idea brew in
his head for two or three years.
Then, by talking about his pro
posal for a Eugene-based group
around the University’s theatre
department, he found enough
people to start rehearsals.
