UO is too powerful
for Portland, Idaho
■ The No. 39 Ducks
rumble successfully
through their first home
matches of the season
By Robbie McCallum
for the Emerald
Domination was the name of
the game this weekend as the Ore
gon women's tennis team picked
up two easy wins.
The 39th-ranked Ducks lived
up to expectations and earned
their first wins of the season.
The Ducks put Portland away
on Friday and Idaho on Saturday
by identical scores of 8-1.
The two non-league wins evened
Oregon’s overall record at 2-2.
On Friday, the Ducks played
their home opener at the Eugene
Swim and Tennis Club.
Oregon’s No. 1 player, Alina
Wygonowska, lost a tough, three
set match to Courtney Perkins,
the Pilots’ No. 1 competitor. But
besides that, it was ail Oregon.
Freshman Monika Gieczys was
impressive in a sweep of Port
land’s Erin Smith, 6-0,6-0. Fresh
man Jeanette Mattson won for the
first time in a Duck uniform, de
feating the Pilot’s Katy Smith in
three sets, 7-5,2-6,6-3.
All three doubles teams for
Oregon won as well, led by
Gieczys and junior Sarah Col
istro’s 8-1 win over Portland’s
Yenny Njoo and Jana Jusupovic.
“We really fought hard [Satur
day] and played well from top to
bottom,” said head coach Jack
Griffin in a press release. “If we
keep doing that, we’re going to see
some results. Every single person
stepped it up in the third set and
played well in the crunch time.”
A shaky Idaho squad faced the
Ducks on Saturday at the Willow
Creek Racquet Club. It was the
first match of the season for the
Vandals, who had three players
competing in their first college
match. Some Idaho players were
suffering from illness.
Oregon clinched the contest
early, sweeping every singles
match in two sets. Sophomore Va
lerie Young led the Ducks by dom
inating Idaho’s Cameron Erickson,
6-0,6-0.
Sophomores Adeline Arnaud
and Katie Nyland both picked up
their second wins of the home
stand. Arnaud and Nyland also
paired for two double match wins.
The Vandal’s lone point came
in doubles play. Pooja Deshmukh
and Barbora Kudilkova narrowly
defeated Wygonowska and Matt
son, 8-5. Gieczys and Colistro fell
behind early, but won six straight
games to outlast Idaho’s Gloriano
Serrano and Erickson.
Gieczys is likely to be on the
verge of earning a national rank
ing after having a successful
weekend coupled with an earlier
defeat of Cali
fornia’s 9th
ranked, Amy
Jensen.
“We still are
not running on
all cylinders,”
Griffin said,
our ups-and
downs right now and we can be a
better team. There are still things
we need to work on if our goal is
to be a top-25 team. We need to
play better to do that. Of course
we won, which is a positive, but
we need to keep working and
hope things come together.
“It’s early in the season for us,
but if this continues, all the pieces
will come together and we’ll be a
good team,” Griffin said.
The Ducks continue Pacific-10
conference play on Friday, Feb. 11,
against-UCLA. The Bruins (3-1)
are currently ranked 8th after be
ing upset by No. 31 Arizona.
UCLA is led by 66th ranked
Sarah Walker and 85th ranked An
nica Cooper. The duo of Petya Man
nova and Walker are ranked 19th in
the doubles competition. Action
begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Willow
Creek Racquet club.

Successful participants will gain an in-depth
understanding of health care delivery and its
financing, will learn about the health issues of college
students, and will develop interpersonal skills and
confidence.
Routine meetings are scheduled at 3 p.m. Fridays,
allowing members to plan their class schedules
accordingly.
Applications can be picked up at the
University Student Health Center front desk.
Completed applications should be
submitted to the University Health Center
