Elevator continued from page 1 project based on where the project is,” Nowak said. He said the construction in cludes installation of electric wires at an extended part of the building, and those have to be compatible with those in the exist ing part of the EMU. Nowak said the construction not only includes installing the eleva tor, but also building new lobby ar eas on the EMU main, second and third floors and connecting those areas to the remaining part of the EMU. In the future, an extra stop will be added by the post office in the lower part of the EMU, he said. The total construction cost of the elevator is about $700,000, in which $330,000 came from the student incidental fee, which was approved by students through a ballot measure in the 1998 ASUO elections, said Susan Racette, EMU associate director and busi ness manager. Racette said the remaining amount of money came from dif ferent sources, including an allo cation of $200,000 from the Stu dent Senate in spring 1998; $100,000 from the Oregon Univer sity System building fee fund; an anonymous donation of $50,000; and $25,000 from the EMU build ing reserve. She also said the proj ect originally had the due date of Oct. 15, and the delay was caused by the contractor. The elevator was constructed to provide access to people with mo bility impairments. A stair-lift was installed on the north side of the building but has been broken for a few years, causing it to be in viola tion to the Americans with Disabil ities Act. The ADA requires all new structures, facilities and remodel projects be accessible to the dis abled. In the case of buildings that were not accessible before 1990, the ADA requires alternative means of accessibility be provided. Because of the ADA require ments, the International Lounge is closed for any formal group events, and the International Student As sociation is one of the student groups that is being affected most. Ilona Widjojo, ISA program co ordinator, said the ISA has to move its weekly coffee hour to Taylor Lounge on the main level of the EMU because of the ADA re quirements. The ISA “can’t use [the Interna tional Student Lounge] for any of our events: the reception, coffee hour or the informational meeting or anything considering to the In ternational Week,” Widjojo said. ISA co-director Haya Matsumo to said the elevator will provide better access to students and facul ty and hopefully attract more peo ple to the lounge. The ISA is plan ning to relocate the weekly coffee hour back to the Lounge when the construction of the elevator is com pleted, Matsumoto said. “The completion of the elevator will affect both international [stu dents] and generally the Universi ty community in ways that the In ternational Lounge will be used as a space for cultural exchange,” Matsumoto said.
