Before the night began,
Oregon was one of four
teams leading the climb to
the top of the Pacific-10
Conference.
But on Thursday night, in
Tucson, Ariz., the Ducks got
left behind in the woods —
Loren Woods, that is.
Woods, the 7-1 junior
transfer center for Arizona
(18-4 overall, 7-1 Pac-10),
did about everything hu
manly possible to help his
team stay atop with a huge
77-71 victory over the
Ducks (15-4, 6-2) in front of
a sold-out McKale Court
crowd of 14,523.
Woods used his lengthy
arms and unmatched pres
ence to dominate the game
with a triple-double of 16
points, 10 rebounds and 14
blocked shots.
His 14 blocks tied the
NCAA record held by David
Robinson, Shawn Bradley
and Alabama’s Roy Rogers.
And Woods didn’t waste
much time setting the tone.
On the Ducks’ first pos
session, A.D. Smith drove to
the hoop on Woods.
Result: Block.
The ball went right to Flo
Hartenstein who put up a
strong shot attempt.
Result: Swat.
Then Anthony Norwood
received the ball and
slashed hard to the lane and
tried to fire up a streaking
jumper.
Result: Rejection.

The Arizona schools
present the toughest
“double” in the Pacific
10 women’s basketball
conference.
It’s because they’re
both such quick, athlet
ic teams. The Wildcats
(16-3 overall, 5-3 Pac
10) are ranked No. 15 in
the ESPN poll. Arizona
State (11-6,4-3) is better
than it’s heen in years —
proving so by nearly up
setting the Wildcats last
Sunday in Tucson.
“I don’t think we play
two teams as good as
they are back-to-back all
year,” Oregon point
guard Shaquala
Williams said. “We
can’t take a game off
from this series. In most
Pac-10 series, you have
one team that's kind of a
slouch. But they don’t
have that.”

UCLA last Saturday,
then this weekend’s

The Oregon wrestling
team opened its road trip
with a hard-fought win over
Brigham Young.
The win extended the
team’s winning streak to six
straight wins and lifted its
overall record to 10-3.
The Ducks took the over
all match 20-19, and need
ed two big scoring matches
from junior college transfer
Eugene Harris and senior
Doug Lee, ranked ninth in
the nation. Second-year
head coach Chuck Kearney
said that wins by Lee and
Harris put the Ducks over
the top for the win.
“With a closely-contested
match like we had, bonus
points are crucial,” Kearney
said. “The wins by Eugene
and Doug were big for us. ”
