There were signs early on
that this game was going to
be a war.
Before pregame introduc
tions even began, both
UCLA and Oregon players
huddled up on center court
separately, arm in arm, and
vied for position on the Duck
emblem. Amid the roar of
the crowd and with their
backs touching, the Bruins
tried to force the Ducks away
in a longer-than-usual
pregame huddle. But Oregon
wouldn’t be moved.
“They tried to take our
spot, but we weren’t going
to be backed down,” said
junior forward Bryan
Bracey. “We were moving
back and forth, but we
wanted to let them know
that we were holding our
ground.”
It was a clear indicator of
things to come.
Oregon got down early,
fought back toward the mid
dle and then held its ground
and took control late, send
ing UCLA (12-6 overall, 3-4
Pacific-10 Conference)
home with a 73-58 thump
ing in front of a roaring sold
out McArthur Court crowd
of 9,087.

Bryan Bracey and the Ducks let loose in Saturday’s resounding 73-58 victory against the Bruins.
■ Oregon forwards Bryan Bracey and
A.D. Smith had a strong inside
presence in the Ducks’ win Saturday
Following Oregon’s big
win against UCLA on Satur
day, the Ducks’ Bryan
Bracey was asked to de
scribe how it felt for the
Ducks (15-3 overall, 6-1 Pa
cific-10 Conference) to be
atop the Pac-10 standings
after running the Bruins out
of McArthur Court.
Bracey described it as
“lovely.”
“Lovely” also describes
the performance of both
Bracey and forward A.D.
Smith. The two Oregon for
wards were key in the
Ducks’ win, scoring 18
points each.
“I’m glad we finally got
the opportunity to get the
respect we deserve national
ly,” Bracey said. “We’ve al
ways been a good team, but
we haven’t always played
up to our potential. I think
we deserve this. We worked
hard to get here.”
Smith and Bracey had the
unenvious task of battling
taller players all game, but
they still managed to make
their presence felt. The 6
foot-7 Bracey and 6-8 Smith
matched UCLA’s 6-10
Jerome Moiso and 6-11 Dan
Gadzuric in rebounding,
combining for 13 boards.

What a trip.
Lose to improving-but
mediocre Southern Califor
nia. Win at No. 10 UCLA.
The Oregon women’s
basketball team (14-5 over
all, 5-2 Pacific-10 Confer
ence) left for Los Angeles
intent on at least splitting
its games with USC and the
Bruins.
Thinking that if No. 10
UCLA — who shared the
Pac-10 championship with
the Ducks last season —
should happen to get the
best of Oregon Saturday,
then at least the Ducks
would be within a game of
the first-place Bruins when
they got home.
Oregon got its split—but
in most improbable fash
ion.
On Thursday the Women
of Troy
beat the
Ducks on a
question
able,
buzzer
beating
shot by
Tiffany Elmore, who report
edly said afterwards that
even she couldn’t believe
the officials counted it.
Regardless, USC got the
win, and Oregon faced the
prospect of being swept in
conference play for the first
time in nearly half a
decade.
It didn’t happen.
“I’m just so proud of this
team right now,” said Jody
Runge, the Ducks’ elated
head coach, on KUGN after
her team’s 67-58 victory.
Runge mixed up defensive
sets and watched her team
hold UCLA 21 points be
low its season average, thus
becoming the only team not
ranked in the top 10 to beat
UCLA (12-5, 6-1) this sea
son.
