As a boxing movie, “The Hurri
cane” scores some sweet style
points. Director Norman Jewison
obviously watched Martin
Scorcese’s classic pugilist flick
“Raging Bull” to glean a few film
making techniques for his own
fight scenes, right down to the
black-and-white cinematography.
From a drama standpoint, the
film sometimes plods along,
throwing too few jabs or stinging
combinations. Other than Denzel
Washington, who plays Rubin
Carter, and Vicellous Reon Shan
non in the role of Lesra Martin, a
youth Carter befriends, the acting
ensemble is just average.
Viewed as a “true-life” docu
mentary, the story of “Hurricane”
Carter’s erroneous arrest for mur
der and subsequent 19 years in
prison takes a few shots below the
belt. Playing loose with the facts of
Carter’s life is one thing; creating
inflammatory' characters to create
sympathy and rage is a shame.

ine Paterson, N.J., mid
dleweight fighter named “Hurri
cane,” ‘due to a flurried punching
manner, took his hometown and
the boxing world by storm in the
early 1960s. Of course, all around
the country the swirling issue was
civil rights, and Carter was not
afraid to voice his opinions on
race matters.
Never an idol to the hometown
police department anyway —
Carter was in numerous legal
scrapes as an adolescent and as a
teen — his outspoken nature
made it seem inevitable that the
two forces would someday col
lide.
In October of 1966, that con
frontation happened in the form
of the arrest of Carter and a friend,
John Artis, on charges of triple
homicide. Two gunmen mur
dered three white patrons at a lo
cal bar and grill, and eyewitnesses
told authorities that two black
men were seen leaving the scene.
Artis and Carter, who was in
training for his next attempt at
winning the middleweight cham
pionship, were pulled over a
short distance from the diner and
held for questioning. Despite con
flicting and rather dubious evi
dence, the two men were eventu
ally convicted of the murders and
sentenced to three life prison
terms.
The penitentiary setting gives
Washington a chance to really
show his acting expertise. The
scene depicting Carter’s 90-day
stint in “the hole” is brilliant and
eerie at the same time. Washing
