Oregon picks up five wins
■ After losing the Civil War,
the Oregon Wrestling team
makes a come back
By Matt O'Neill
Oregon Daily Emerald
Now they are on a roll.
Coming off a sound defeat at
the hands of Oregon State, the
Oregon wrestling team bounced
back to notch five wins last week
end.
They began their streak Friday
night with an upset of then-No. 25
Fresno State, and continued by
winning all four dual matches in
the Oregon Wrestling Classic held
in Portland on Saturday.
In front of 553 faithful fans at
McArthur Court, the Ducks over
came an early forfeit to defeat the
Bulldogs convincingly, 25-12.
The Oregon graplers won seven of
10 matches en route to the win.
One of the defeats came be
cause redshirt freshman Brian
Watson had to forfeit due to a
broken hand that he suffered in
practice last week. Head coach
Chuck Kearney felt the team was
better off taking the forfeit instead
of a defeat because of the quality
of Fresno State’s 133-pound
wrestler.
“Their 133-pounder is a very
good wrestler,” Kearney said,
“and we didn’t want to send
Adam [Marino] out there against
him as his first match of the year.”
The two keys to the match, according
to Kearney, were the opening match
where freshman Jason Harless defeated
Derrick Hayes in the 125-pound weight
class with a rfiajor decision (11-3) and
the overtime win by Jake Leak against
Tom Gohde (4-2), which extended the
Ducks’ lead to an insurmountable 22-12
margin.
“Jason continued on with the
hot streak that he has kinda gotten
into lately,” Kearney said. “As far
as the emotional point of the
match, Jake’s win was definitely
key.”
Leair also sensed the crowd
urging him on, which he used to
his advantage.

Tony Overstake and the Ducks trip up five different teams during the weekend.
“I did sense the crowd there,”
Leair said. “It was an energizer
when they stood up at the end, it
was refreshing. ”
The Ducks then used the mo
mentum from the upset to propel
themselves to four more victories
in Portland. During the morning
session of the

stitute, 29-13. There were three
wins by pin and one win by for
feit in favor of the Ducks.
The second match of the day
saw Oregon cruise to an even big
ger margin of victory over Pacific
University, 35-9. The Ducks won
eight of 10 matches, including
three by pins.
In the afternoon session, Ore
gon continued to breeze with a
38-10 pummeling of Central
WRfSTiiNG
Washington. Both Leair and Har
less won by pins. Two Wildcat
forfeits helped the Ducks.
Oregon then went on to make it
four-for-four on the day when it
defeated another Pac-10 rival, Cal
State Fullerton, 29-13.
Four graplers for the Ducks went
undefeated. David Watson re
bounded from his 6-0 drubbing
against Fresno State to win all four
of his matches at the 141-pound
weight class.
Junior college transfer, Eugene
Harris continued his winning
streak with another four victories
at the 157-pound level. Eighth
ranked Doug Lee continued his
great season when he cruised to
two wins.
The surprise performance of
the tournament came from fresh
man Leair, who used his overtime
win against Fresno to push him to
four wins, including one pin
against Cal Poly’s Greg Harrington
to open the tournament for the
Ducks.
