Runge wants change in attitude
Head coach Jody Runge wants more aggressive play, like Angelina Wolvert taking it strong
to the hole.
■ Head coach Jody
Runge believes her
team has been too
nice during the first 12
games of the season
By Mirjam Swanson
Oregon Daily Emerald
It’s a good group.
A genuinely nice collec
tion of young women.
So nice, in fact, that after
the Oregon women’s basket
ball team’s win against San
ta Clara on Dec. 30, Bronco
head coach Caren
Horstmeyer paused to com
pliment Jody Runge about
the pleasant disposition of
her team.
“When we were at Santa
Clara, the [Bronco] coach
said, ‘We really enjoyed
playing with you, because
[your] girls are not dirty and
they play hard.’
“Well,” said Runge in all
earnestness, “sometimes,
when it comes right down to
the grit, you might have to
do what you have to do —
and that may not be nice.
That’s the lesson that they
have to learn right now: Are
we going to do what it takes
to win? Or are we going to be
nice and say, ‘Oh well, they
beat us.’ ”
Certainly, this team, 9-3
and ranked No. 24 in the na
tion, is not OK with being
beaten.
And just as surely, Runge
said, along with other devel
oping factions of their col
lective game, this relatively
young Oregon team is still
working on finding a mean
streak, a wiji-at-al 1-costs
mentality. The type of mind

■ The Ducks gained
confidence from play
at the Rainbow Classic
By Tim Pyle
Oregon Daily Emerald
Make no mistake about it,
the Oregon men’s basketball
team didn’t get much out of
Tuesday night’s trampling
of Division-II St. Martin’s at
McArthur Court.
The Ducks (9-2 overall)
looked like they were sleep
walking at times during the
game, and they still beat the
Saints by 42 points, 94-52,
in their final tuneup for the
Pacific-10 Conference sea
son, which begins Saturday
night at Oregon State.
“Our whole focus was
just to get through this game
and then really start our
prep work,” said head coach
Ernie Kent, admitting his
own and his team’s fatigue
from the just completed trip
to Hawaii.
But on that trip to the Dec.
28-30 Rainbow Classic, Ore
gon did find out a lot about
itself — mainly, that it’s
pretty good.
“I think it was real benefi
cial,” junior forward Bryan
Bracey said of the tourna
ment experience.
Feeding off the momen
tum gained by beating pre
viously unbeaten Minneso
ta in the Portland Jam on
Dec. 18 and routing North
ern Arizona at home on Dec.
22, the Ducks blazed into
their first-round matchup
with No. 19 Wake Forest.
Oregon knew it could
make a big early-season
statement and significantly
help its NCAA Tournament
quest with a good showing
against the Demon Deacons,
which had already defeated
Temple and Arkansas.
And represent them
selves well the Ducks did,

Scales’ leaning jump shot
with 4.7 seconds left and his
