EL PASO, Texas — It was a nail-bit
ing, breathtaking and, most of all,
fitting end.
After a regular season defined by
last-minute heroics, the Oregon football
team again came through when it mat
tered most to secure a 24-20 upset of No.
12 Minnesota at the 66th Sun Bowl on
Dec. 31.
Sophomore quarterback Joey Harring
ton, already the engineer of game-win
ning drives against Arizona and Arizona
State, continued to thrive in waning-mo
ment pressure situations.
With the Ducks trailing 20-17 and facing
probably their last gasp on a fourth-and
11 late in the fourth quarter, Harrington
stepped up in the pocket and found that
familiar go-to guy, senior wide receiver
Tony Hartley. The 23-yard reception gave
Hartley his seventh for 113 yards and Ore
gon new life at the Golden Gopher 21
yard line.
“I scrambled, and Tony just slid open,”
said Harrington, who completed 20-of-43
passes for 232 yards and threw for one
touchdown while running for two others.
“He’s our big-play maker, and he made
another big play.”
