Now that the fall schedule is
over for Oregon tennis, both the
men’s and women’s coaches are
able to take a step back and eval
uate the situation.
For the men, head coach Chris
Russell is pleased with the way
his team performed during the
fall. He attributes the improve
ment shown by the squad to an
increased conditioning regiment.
“Our conditioning improved a
lot during the fall,” Russell said.
“Which translates into better
play on the court for us.”
Along with the improved con
ditioning, Russell saw some great
strides made by some of his play
ers. One of those players was
David Becker, whose play during
the fall greatly impressed Russell.
“David was among the most
improved for us,” Russell said.
“He really stepped up his play
from last season.”
Another player who improved
during the fall was senior and
No. 1 singles player, Joaquin
Hamdan
“Joaquin played some good
tennis as well,” Russell. “Now,
I’d like to see him continue to
climb to the next level and close
out more matches.”
Russell used the fall tourna
ments to gauge where the new
comers will fit in during the Pa
cific-10 Conference play. He is
confident that they all will be
able to provide much needed
depth to his squad.
“The new guys showed that
they will be able to contribute
this year,” Russell said. “In the
fall, we look to get a feel for their
game, to see if they can realisti
cally be able to contribute in Jan
uary and the Pac-10s.”
On the women’s side, head
coach Jack Griffin is happy with
the way his team performed in
the fall. All of his players have
remained healthy, which is a big
plus for the Ducks.
“This has been the best fall sea
son for us injury-wise,” Griffin
said. “Our core group of players
has really been able to stay to
gether.”
Two Ducks
who have fall
en prey to the
injury bug in
past years are
Alina
Wvgonowska
and Sarah Col
istro. This year they have both re
mained healthy and played well
this fall.
“Alina is healthy again which
is a big plus,” Griffin said. “I
think she showed what she can
do when she remains healthy
when she won the consolation
round of the Rolex. I think Sarah
is coming along great. One thing
about her is that she doesn’t have
to spend a lot of time on the court
to maintain her level of play.”
Griffin said that if Colistro can
string consecutive weeks of play
together she will play and inte
gral role for the Ducks this sea
son.
The newcomers to the program
have also shown the ability to
contribute on a regular basis.
Both Monika Giecyzs and Amy
Juppenlatz have impressed Grif
fin with their play during the fall.
“I think that Monika will be
pushing Alina for the top spot by
the end of the year,” Griffin said.
“Amy has also been a big plus for
us, although she hasn’t had any
startling results so far, she is right
I expected her to be.”
Both of the teams will return to
action in January when the
women begin Pac-10 play against
Stanford and California on the 21
and 22.
The men will take the court
again when they play in the Cor
vallis Open on January 7-9.
