Students studying at the last minute are familiar to Susan Lesyk, director of Acade mic Learning Services, which is located in the basement of Prince Lucien Campbell Hall. “We see an increase in the number of students who are com ing into the math labs and the writing lab,” Lesyk said. She said every year she notices this lab-usage increase, as well as an increase in students who come in for individual counsel ing right after Thanksgiving break. Lesyk said she thinks stu dents use the Thanksgiving holi day to get organized and make a plan of what they need to accom plish by the end of the term. Paul Hartley, a graduate teach ing fellow and co-director of BEST, said he has not noticed a significant increase in students seeking help right before finals. Hartley said the BEST center has been busier than usual all term and he thinks students might have spread out their studying throughout the term rather than cramming it in all at the end. Wolfsehr’s strategy for suc ceeding at finals is to start study ing early and write out important concepts. Wolfsehr said she is a visual learner and benefits from aids such as flashcards. Wolfsehr said she thinks most professors usually give hints about the material covered on the final, which makes studying easi er and more focused. Besides her take-home final, Wolfsehr has a final paper due and will take two final exams next week. She said getting orga nized early will keep her from getting too stressed right before her tests. Thursday afternoon, Shawn Vredenburg, an undeclared ju nior, had not given too much thought to finals. He said in the past he has tried to cram in as much material as he can a couple of nights before the test but is neither worried nor stressed be cause he usually does well. Deidre Schuetz, a senior dou ble-majoring in international studies and Spanish, said she tries to spread out her studying as much as possible to avoid stress. “Usually I tend to do a little bit of each subject a day, so I don’t get burned out,” she said. Like Wolfsehr, Schuetz was sitting at a table in the Fishbowl that was filled with pieces of pa per, books and note cards. Schuetz said flash cards help her organize her thoughts for papers and enable her to move her ideas around. While Schuetz starts reviewing course material and preparing herself for finals early, she said she studies until the last minute and frequently walks into the exam room with notes in her hand. “I like to study as much as pos sible,” she said. The ALS math and writing drop-in labs in PLC are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the term and will be open from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m., Monday through Wednesday during finals week. wanl’ b make a difference? project saferide is looking for volunteors for winter termCall 346' 0653 or stop by suite 3 in the EMU women helping women CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CLASSICAL MUSIC, OPERA, BROADWAY, FILM SCORES & TALKING BOOKS ON COMPACT DISC Musique Gourmet Catering to the Discriminating Collector CD’S FROM $3.95 In the Fifthpearl Building 207 E. 5th Avenue OPEN 7 DAYS Free Parking 343-9000 fist ° _ d _ ° Jot: dH3£sbs?h°] 3-43—4480 driving home?
