Across the Street from Sacred Heart Hospital Webnotes Continued from Page 1 of work earlier this year, Maser said. Deflem insists that these com panies are in business solely to make a profit and any interest they have in education is sec ondary. Every site carries a dis claimer stating that the company is not responsible for the informa tion provided and it is not guar anteed to be accurate, he said. “I am accountable and respon sible in my job,” Deflem said. “The people [publishing these lecture notes] are not qualified or trained to teach. They are inter fering in the relationship be tween professors and students. Some universities have made moves to kick the companies out of the classroom. Two approach es have been taken. The first ap proach makes it a violation of the student conduct code to sell notes for profit. The second ap proach involves prosecution of the lecture-notes companies for violations of state and federal copyright laws. John Sandbrook, assistant provost in the college of letters and sciences at UCLA, informed the companies that the sale of lecture notes violates UCLA’s 11 We’ve never had a law suit filed against us. So far, no major litigation has taken place, but there is some de bate about the applicability of copyright laws to lectures. The copyright issue is compli cated. There are questions about ownership of lecture notes. “Ar guably the professor is delivering the lecture because it’s his or her job. The university would then own the intellectual property,” Johnson said. Study24-7.com executives claim that the lecture notes pub lished on their Web site are the original creations of the student note-takers and therefore the stu dent has the copyright. “It’s the note taker’s opinion about class, their interpretations of the lecture,” Maser said. “We’ve never had a law suit filed against us. It’s 100 percent legal. How someone can say this business is hurting education is beyond me.” Alpha Tau Continued from Page 1 Greek values. Nicholas Doane, a junior busi ness major and a member of Sigma Nu said his fraternity plans to go dry by Fall of 2000. While Doane showed some con cern about the loss of freedom the pledge entails, he said the charter is necessary and will have a posi tive impact on the Greek system. “I’m sure it’s going to help a lot, not just in Eugene, but nationwide too,” Doane said. Unlike Alpha Tau Omega, how ever, Sigma Nu is one of two Uni versity fraternity chapters that were asked by national organizations to take this step. Phi Delta Theta was also asked to follow the movement. Seven University sororities volun tarily signed the Select 2000 Charter this October, some pledging to go dry immediately and others agreeing to go dry by fall term of 2000. Atlas Continued from Pagel hance student education.” Meacham said he hopes the atlas will be useful to students and citizens of the community who are concerned with local planning issues, watersheds, land ownership and trans portation. The atlas offers a collection of 20 sections of maps and text that presents information on different aspects of the county. According to Meacham, more than 30 students worked on the project, which received support from the Lane Council of Governments, the Universi ty InfoGraphics Lab, and the University Social Science In structional Lab. For many students, the op portunity to polish their skills and work with Meacham was the greatest reward of the project. “He is one of the finest car tographers around,” geography graduate student Ken Kato said. “The students from the University of Oregon that come away from this program are recognized worldwide. In working with the best, we don’t realize how good it is.” Meacham said he hopes the practical experience gained by students will enable them to have a better understanding of geography. “Knowing the geography of an area makes for more effec tive planning of natural re sources, transportation, and urban growth issues and the understanding of natural haz ard issues,” he said.
