“Oregon’s defense hasn’t exact
ly been scintillating,” wrote a re
porter for the Vancouver
Columbian earlier this season.
Not a particularly favorable re
view, for sure. But nonetheless,
just another voice in the consis
tent media chorus of criticism to
ward the Ducks’ defense.
“Boiler’s redemption may come
in the last two games: against an
Oregon defense that allows 403.9
yards a game... explosive offense
and suspect defense ... some of
the defensive positions are
makeshift because of injuries...”
That’s just a sampling.
It’s like the press has labeled
Duck defenders — except senior
linebacker Peter Sirmon, perhaps
—as totally incompetent.
That’s odd, really, because with
only the Civil War left, Oregon
ranks third in the conference in
scoring defense, third in rushing
defense, and yes, seventh in total
defense. Surely, it will be tested
again against Oregon State’s wide
