Seattle rallies past Broncos
By Jim Cour
The Associated Press
SEATTLE — Jon Kitna passed
20 yards to Sean Dawkins for a
touchdown with 7:10 left, making
Joey Galloway’s return to the
Seattle Seahawks a winning one
in a 20-17 victory over the Denver
Broncos on Sunday night.
The Seahawks (7-2) grabbed a
two-game lead in the AFC West
and beat the two-time defending
Super Bowl champion Broncos
(3-7) for the first time since 1995.
Under new coach Mike Holm
gren, Seattle won its fourth
straight game for the first time
since 1986.
Galloway, who reported to the
Seahawks this week to end a 100
day contract stalemate, made a
major contribution in his first
game since last Dec. 27.
He made an acrobatic 28-yard
reception in front of Dale Carter
on Seattle’s winning drive, giving
the Seahawks the ball at the Bron
cos 20. Two plays later, Kitna
passed to Dawkins in front of the
goal-line, beating safety George
Coghill for the go-ahead score.
Chris Miller, subbing for the in
jured Brian Griese and Bubby
Brister, led the Broncos back from
a 10-0 halftime deficit. He com
pleted 14 passes for 143 yards
and two touchdowns in the sec
ond half, but
tight end
Dwayne Car
swell dropped
a fourth-down
pass with 2:51 left.
On the final play, Ed McCaffrey
caught a 42-yard pass to the Seat
tle 38, but time then ran out.
In the first minute of the fourth
quarter, Todd Peterson cut Den
ver’s lead to 17-13 with a 43-yard
field goal. Peterson’s second field
goal of the game came after a 39
yard pass to Galloway to the Den
ver 18. Broncos coach Mike Shana
han challenged the catch near the
sideline, saying Galloway was out
of bounds, but the play stood after
a television replay review.
Denver used a 32-yard pass inter
ference penalty against Shawn
Springs and a 36-yard pass from
Miller to McCaffrey to set up its sec
ond touchdown of the third quarter,
when the Broncos scored 17 points.
Denver took its first lead at 17
10 on a 1-yard pass from Miller to
Howard Griffith with 50 seconds
left in the period. Miller was 9
for-9 for 93 yards in the quarter.
Earlier in the quarter, the Bron
cos tied the score at 10 by taking
advantage of two turnovers.
After Ahman Green fumbled
the second-half kickoff, the Bron
cos’ Anthony Lynn recovered on
the Denver 25. Jason Elam kicked
a 25-yard field goal after the drive
bogged down at the Seattle 7.
Tory James’ interception gave
Denver the ball on its 40 and the
Broncos scored seven plays later
on a 23-yard pass to McCaffrey.
The Seahawks led 10-0 at half
time on a 35-yard field goal by Pe- -
terson and a 10-yard touchdown
pass from Kitna to Derrick Mayes.
Seattle’s Kerry Joseph stepped
in front of McCaffrey at the goal
line and returned an interception
of Miller’s pass 29 yards with 1:46
left in the first half.

points and no rebounds. Anthony Norwood im
pressed the crowd with an athletic full-court drive
and layup, but that was his only basket of the game.
Bryan Bracey and Ben Lindquist also were shut down
by the Pioneers, recording zero points and zero re
bounds in a combined 10 minutes of action.
For Jackson — who led Oregon newcomers with 11
points in 23 minutes — playing in an actual game for
the first time since the 1998 NCAA Final Four with
Utah was an unusual feeling.
“That’s the first time in a long time I’d ever been
nervous,” Jackson said. “I just really didn’t know
what to expect playing under a new crowd. Every
body’s yelling, and it’s just loud. Every possession
counts—a lot more than it does in practice—and it’s
like, ‘Man, it’s a lot more pressure.’ ”
Oregon hosts its second exhibition game on
Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at McArthur Court against
the talent-laden California All-Stars.
“That team coming in has [former UCLA star]
Charles O’Bannon and could have [former Clipper] Bo
Kimble back with them,” Kent said. “They are a
loaded basketball team. Defensively, we have got to
get bettefbetween now and Wednesday, and we will. ”
