News brief Accused Xerox gunman to be reprimanded in meeting HONOLULU — A copier re pairman accused of gunning down seven of his Xerox Corp. co workers last week was about to be reprimanded for not working as hard as his colleagues, the city prosecutor said Tuesday. The revelation came after Byran Uyesugi was indicted by a grand jury on charges of murder and at tempted murder. He remains held on $7 million bail pending anoth er court hearing next week. If convicted, Uyesugi could face life imprisonment without parole. Hawaii does not have the death penalty. No motive has been disclosed for the killings at a Xerox parts warehouse on Nov. 2. Uyesugi is accused of walking into the ware house that morning and firing a 9 mm handgun at his colleagues and supervisor 28 times. Uyesugi surrendered that after noon after a five-hour standoff with police. City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle said Tuesday the shootings- oc curred before a meeting to address the fact that Uyesugi was carrying a lighter work load than the other repairmen. But Carlisle said, “It wasn’t just a meeting to pick on him. I have no information that Xerox or any body in this room intended to fire that guy.” Xerox president and CEO G. Richard Thoman stressed last week that Uyesugi was not about to be fired. Xerox officials refused to discuss Uyesugi’s work history, citing employee confidentiality rules. Xerox’s vice president for Hawaii, Glenn Sexton, said he had no information to indicate that Uyesugi had been anything but a good worker in his 15 years with the company. Uyesugi’s attorneys have said they will explore an insanity de fense. The Associated Press m Camp Adventure 2000 Be a part of the MAGIC!
