“Oregon has the ability to be
just as successful as we have
been,” Charles said. “They have
a good school, a quality program
and facility, as well as the North
west being a good place to live.
It’s possible.”
The Ducks finished their non
conference schedule with a 4-0
win over Auburn and a 3-1 loss
to Cal State-Northridge.
Stanford and California were
the first two Pac-10 opponents.
Oregon shut down the Cardinal
offense, and Stanford had to rely
on a penalty kick by Ronnie Fair
to win 1-0.
The Golden Bears then slipped
by the Ducks for the second sea
son in a row. Oregon was unable
to get revenge at home for an
overtime road loss in 1998, los
ing 1-0 this time.
Opening the Pac-10 season 0-2
didn’t rattle the Ducks. The fol
lowing week, Oregon continued
its dominance over Oregon State,
overwhelming the Beavers 4-0 to
extend its record to 4-0 all-time
against its in-state rival.
Washington State and Wash
ington are two teams the Ducks
have had no success against in
the past. This season was differ
ent, however, as Oregon ended
its six-game losing streak to the
Washington schools with a 2-1
win over the Cougars before los
ing a 1-0 heartbreaker at the end
of the second overtime to the
Huskies.
The Ducks’ loss to Southern
California the following week
was overshadowed by their
tremendous performance against
UCLA. In the seniors’ last game
at Pape Field, Melissa Parker’s
Jeffrey Stockton Emerald
Forward Erin Anderson leaves Oregon as the program’s all-time leading scorer.
game-winning goal sealed a vic
tory that Oregon forward Erin
Anderson called “definitely one
of the biggest wins in the history
of the program.”
The season ended last week
end with a 2-1 loss to Arizona
State and a scoreless tie at Ari
zona.
While consistency wasn’t the
Ducks’ best virtue, Oregon con
tinued to improve as a team. At
the end of their journey, the Ore
gon seniors look back with satis
faction at the program they de
veloped, and the fun they had
doing it.
“We were a lot better this year
than we ever have been in the
past,” Ducks defender Carrie
McLanahan said. “I have never
been on such an amazing team.
We came together as a team and
as friends.”
