Eugene Mayor Jim Torrey, as
well as many University and com
munity members, came together
Sunday to recognize the impor
tance of international students on
campus.
About 80 people attended the
reception at the Gerlinger Alumni
Lounge.
The recepti on was organized by
the Friendship Foundation and
the Office of International Educa
tion and Exchange.
“It’s a chance to celebrate the
presence of international students
on the University campus,” said
Tom Mills, the director of the
OIEE. Mills said international stu
dents bring cultural diversity to
campus.
Eugene Mayor Jim Torrey was a
guest speaker at the reception.
Torrey said he is pleased that so
many international students have
chosen to study in Eugene. He in
vited international students to
talk to 4-J school district students
in Eugene and introduce their re
spective cultures in the class
rooms.
University Provost John Mose
ley was a guest speaker at the re
ception, in lieu of President
Frohnmayer, who is still at home
recovering from last week’s
surgery. He said the University
has earned a reputation for having
the highest international student

Howard and Marvy Schuman
are two of the community mem

tion.
The Schumans are participat
ing in the Friend Family Program,
in which a new international stu
dent will be introduced to the
family as a friend. This year, the
Schumans are hosting a graduate
student from Taiwan. They said
they both understand the difficul
ty for incoming students to adjust
to a new culture and environ
ment. Howard added that the
family benefits by having a
chance of cross-culture communi
cation.
Ying-che Chen, office manager
for the International Students As
sociation, said the reception pro
vided a chance for international
students to meet with faculty
members at a social event.
