“Certainly we monitor this
stuff, and we don’t want to wear
him out,” Bellotti said. “But if
there’s a young man who can han
dle it, it’s Reuben Droughns.
One player who’s practically
dying to get involved is senior
flanker Tony Hartley.
Saturday will likely be the day
Hartley breaks Cristin McLemore’s
four-year-old record for most career
receiving yards at 2,498. Hartley
will do it with 33 more.
He is also threatening
McLemore’s career mark for
touchdown receptions, need
ing three more to surpass the
record of 24.
After failing to convert in the
red zone on more than a few occa
sions in their 20-17 win against
Arizona State, Oregon would love
seeing Hartley and one of the
quarterbacks connecting for six a
time ox two.
“Last week we got a lot of yards,
but not a lot of points,” Bellotti said.
Defensively, the Ducks are
coming off their best showing this
season. They held the Sun Devils’
offense — which was without sus
pended star running back J.R.
Redmond — to 365 yards. They
also pressured quarterback Ryan
Kealy into a dismal ll-of-27 pass
ing performance, including one
interception.
“Our defense as a whole played
a great game,” senior comerback
Justin Wilcox said.
“But it’s not something that we
can rest on.”

for Oregon State’s double-overtime
victory last season.
Supposing the Ducks do in
deed win out, then what? Well, it
seems inevitable that the Pac-10
championship is going to come
down to a myriad of tiebreakers.
Unless Oregon ties with just
Washington or with the Huskies
and Stanford, the Ducks win eveiy
other tiebreaker, usually because
of a better non-league record.
But the possibility also exists that
— in the event of a four-way tie be
tween Oregon, Washington, Stan
ford and Arizona — the Ducks
would go to Pasadena, Calif., be
cause of their thrilling 44-41 victory
over the ‘Cats on Oct. 23.
So how likely is all of this? Not
as far-fetched as you would think.
If the Huskies and Cardinal
both trip up once, Oregon just
needs either Arizona or Arizona
State to also win out.
What do all these ifs add up to?
