Clowning around, Ariel and Chris Davenport make a Halloween mask together at the Delta Sigma Phi booth. Catharine Kendall Emerald Students create safe Halloween ■ Volunteers from several student organizations gave time for a children’s carnival By Maggie Young Oregon Daily Emerald Tiny witches, fairies and vam pires congregated in Agate Hall Sunday for an event that Child Care Coordinator Dennis Reynolds likes to call a ‘fun-raiser.” University child care centers in cluding the EMU, Vivian Olum and Spencer View Co-Op were invited to participate in the Halloween Car nival for University parents and their children, as well as the public. Several booths were set up to pro vide a variety of Halloween events aimed at preschool and toddler aged children, Reynolds said. Activ ities included a cupcake walk, neck lace-making, face-painting and cre ate-a-mask booths, among others. EMU preschool attendee Amber Cecil had a hard time picking her fa vorite activity among face-painting, cookie decorating and, of course, getting candy. She said that the stu dent volunteers are nice and was glad that her mother brought her. Students, teachers and parents from the EMU Child Care Center along with several University stu dent groups volunteered at the various booths at the festival. Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Kappa, Pi Kappa Phi, Delta Sigma Phi and the University’s baseball team each had volunteers at the Hal loween festival. The carnival pulls the commu nity together said Rebecca Bemert, public relations intern for the EMU Child Care Center. “It’s important to bring students, teachers and parents together,” said Bemert, who is also a senior English and psychology major. This event shows the other side of Halloween on campus, Bemert said. “A lot of students aren’t taking part in riots, they’re here volun teering in a healthy, safe event that promotes family,” she said. When senior Rich Fay, a Univer sity baseball team representative asked his team to participate, he re ceived a very positive response. “Everyone remembers what it was like to be this small and go to Halloween carnivals,” Fay said.
