play multiple positions to com
pensate for the Ducks’ lack of
depth.
“Our first-string happens to be
our second-string in a different
position,” said Zoumboukos.
Seniors Beckett and Deke
Moen have played consistently.
Sophomore Jim Adams has
stepped up in his role at guard in
the last couple weeks. Ryan
Schmid, also a sophomore, start
ed the season at center and
played well, but since then he’s
been slowed by minor injuries.
Senior Scott Fergus has wrestled
with injuries throughout his ca
reer but has not missed a game
this season.
Another factor that’s kept the
line afloat is junior Lee Gundy’s
speedy off-season recovery from
a knee injury in the Aloha Bowl.
Gundy’s two years as an Oregon
starter have been hampered by
injuries. He dodged one bullet
this season after an injury forced
him out of the USC game but did
not stop him from playing the
following week.
Gundy has spent time at left
tackle, right tackle and right
guard.
“We can move around, play
with it and
dial up our
offensive
line,” Gundy
said. “We
shift around
wherever,
and it does
n’t matter
who’s there.
We just get
the job
done.”
Beckett is the only starter to
maintain a single position
throughout this season. He said
that come game time the lack of
depth on the roster isn’t a factor.
“People talk about a lot of
things,” Beckett said. “But as far
as this line is concerned, we look
at it as: if we have five guys out
there, then we’re going to be fine.
People talking is exactly that —
just people talking.
“We’re confident that we’re go
ing to win every game and peo
ple are going to play hard against
us, and we’re going to play hard
against everyone else.”
With Droughns back in action,
the line could have a field day
exploiting Arizona State’s rush
ing defense, which is ranked No.
9 in the Pacific-10 Conference.
But Zoumboukos expects a con
test that will be entirely different
from Arizona.
“This is a totally different de
fensive front,” Zoumboukos said.
“Whereas Arizona’s defensive
front was constantly moving, this
is a more static front, although
they do give you some movement
about 20 percent of the time.
“They feel comfortable that
they can line up and be physical
ly better than you are, so it’s a
different challenge.”
