Gotta appreciate that kind of
mentality in a college football
player.
“He’s a great stereotype-buster
of a Division-1 athlete who’s not
supposed to go to class,” said
Rick Burton, director of the War
saw program. “Buddy flat out
gets it. He’s trying to be sure that
the education he gets is going to
further his aspirations.”
Basically, Buddy’s a good guy
to have around.
“He’s out here every day," se

He’s not a yeller or anything, but
once in a while he’ll get fired
up.”
And nothing riles up Smith
and his teammates like their
pregame stroll through the tun
nel from the locker room to the
playing field, those few minutes
when Autzen Stadium’s electric
ity is immeasurable.
“There’s no greater feeling
than walking into a packed
house at Autzen,” Smith said. “I
don’t think there’s anything that
can compare to that adrenaline
rush, having people totally
caught up in the moment.”
Smith greatly appreciates all
the game-day love that Duck
fans give up.
Of course he does.
But let him assure you, those
40,000-plus fans are missing
something.
“I wish fans who are so into
Duck football could see more
into our lives,” he said. “There’s
more inside our heads than ‘let’s
go crunch each other.’”
“College football is becoming
more of a business every mo
ment, but it’s refreshing being
together with guys for five years.
The guys I came in with are all
quality in that they all bring
something different into your
life. Guys I wouldn’t have met
without football. That’s the side
that fans don’t see.”
Smith’s view is more well
rounded.
“I’m glad this hasn’t turned
into me just being here as a foot
ball player,” Smith said. “It must
have been fate to have come here
and have had it all work out.”
