Trying to get back to space, Man or Astro-Man? performs in
Eugene so they can collect dirt
By Yael Menahem
Oregon Daily Emerald
“Calling from space is a tricky
thing,” according to Birdstuff,
drummer of the band that asks the
ultimate question, Man or Astro
Man?
The story behind this band,
whether human or alien, dates
back seven and a half years when
the band’s spaceship crashed on
earth just outside Alabama.
“We were interstellar beings on
our way to do something else, we
had a mistake and plummeted to
earth,” according to Man or Astro
Man? band member Coco the Elec
tronic Monkey Wizard.
Because they have no way of get
ting back to grid sector 26.B2,
where Coco claims they’re from,
they asked “what’s the best way to
go unnoticed [on earth]?” Become
a band of course.
The next step is to tour the coun
try in search of all of the parts to
their spaceship, collecting them as
they visit each city.
The band will land in Eugene
tonight to perform at the Out-of
This-World Space Ball at the
WOW Hall, which includes a cos
tume contest. One that the band
members will no doubt win, be
cause Coco assures that they will
appear in full space attire com
plete with an eeviac operator’s
outfit.
“The only thing that we cou±d
do is dress up like a rock band in
jeans and t-shirt, but I doubt it,”
Coco said.
The show is not the only reason
that the band is coming to Eugene.
“There’s a composition of soil
that is unique to Eugene,” Coco
said. That should help them put
their spaceship back together or to
experiment further in the Astro
lab.
“We’re just coming up for the
dirt,” Coco concluded.
The band’s influences axe name
ly instrumental guitar and surf mu
sic of the late fifties early sixties.
Some notables that have helped
shape these Astro-men’s sound are
Link Wray, The Ventures, Dick Dale,
The Shadows and Duane Eddy.
They’ve further progressed their
sound in their latest release, “EEVT
AC: Operational Index and Refer
ence Guide, Including Other Mod
ern Computation Devices.”
Coco refers to this sound as
“mixed-phased sound” that he
claims is too advanced for human
who might be ready for it in about
47 or 48 years.
Since the band is behind sched
ule in putting their spaceship back
together, they will stay with us and
continue touring in search of a way
to get back home.
Tickets for the show are $8.
Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and the
space suited Man or Astro-Man?
hit the stage after Causey Way and
Bob Log III.
Causey Way joins Man or Astroman? at the WOW Hall tonight. Bob Log III is also on the bill.
